1 I n those days there is no king in Israel, and in those days the tribe of the Danite is seeking for itself an inheritance to inhabit, for hath not fallen to it unto that day in the midst of the tribes of Israel by inheritance.

Đương lúc đó, chẳng có một vua nơi Y-sơ-ra-ên; chính hồi ấy, chi phái Đan đi tìm một địa phận đặng lập nghiệp; vì từ trước đến giờ, trong chi phái Y-sơ-ra-ên, chi phái nầy chưa nhận được sản nghiệp nào hết.

2 A nd the sons of Dan send, out of their family, five men of them, men, sons of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to traverse the land, and to search it, and they say unto them, `Go, search the land;' and they come into the hill-country of Ephraim, unto the house of Micah, and lodge there.

Vậy, người Đan chọn trong chi phái mình năm người mạnh dạn, sai từ Xô-rê -a và Ê-ta-ôn đi khắp nơi do thám xứ, và dặn họ rằng: Hãy đi do thám xứ. Chúng sang qua núi E

3 T hey with the household of Micah, and they have discerned the voice of the young man, the Levite, and turn aside there, and say to him, `Who hath brought thee hither? and what art thou doing in this and what to thee here?'

Chúng đương ở gần bên nhà Mi-ca, thì nghe tiếng của gã trẻ tuổi, là người Lê-vi, bèn lại gần mà hỏi rằng: Ai dẫn ngươi đến đây? Ngươi ở đây làm chi, và ở chỗ nầy có gì?

4 A nd he saith unto them, `Thus and thus hath Micah done to me; and he hireth me, and I am to him for a priest.'

Người đáp: Mi-ca có đãi tôi thế nầy, thế nầy, cấp cho tôi lương tiền, dùng tôi làm thầy tế lễ cho người.

5 A nd they say to him, `Ask, we pray thee, at God, and we know whether our way is prosperous on which we are going.'

Chúng tiếp: Thế thì, hãy hỏi ý Đức Chúa Trời, để chúng ta biết con đường chúng ta đi đây sẽ có may mắn chăng.

6 A nd the priest saith to them, `Go in peace; over-against Jehovah your way in which ye go.'

Thầy tế lễ đáp: Hãy đi bình an, Đức Giê-hô-va đoái đến con đường của các ngươi đi.

7 A nd the five men go, and come in to Laish, and see the people which in its midst, dwelling confidently, according to the custom of Zidonians, quiet and confident; and there is none putting to shame in the land in thing, possessing restraint, and they far off from the Zidonians, and have no word with man.

Vậy, năm người ấy lên đường, đến La-ít, thấy dân sự tại đó có thói tục dân Si-đôn, ở an ổn, bình tịnh, và vững chắc. Trong kẻ quản hạt xứ đó, chẳng có ai làm cho chúng bị hại chút đỉnh nào hết; chúng vốn cách xa dân Si-đôn, chẳng có việc chi với ai cả.

8 A nd they come in unto their brethren, at Zorah and Eshtaol, and their brethren say to them, `What -- ye?'

Kế ấy, năm người trở về cùng các anh em mình tại Xô-rê -a và Ê-ta-ôn, thì anh em hỏi chúng rằng: Các anh đã làm gì?

9 A nd they say, `Rise, and we go up against them, for we have seen the land, and lo, very good; and ye are keeping silent! be not slothful to go -- to enter to possess the land.

Năm người đáp: Hè! hãy đi lên đánh chúng nó, vì chúng tôi có thấy xứ ấy thật lấy làm tốt nhứt. U

10 W hen ye go, ye come in unto a people confident, and the land large on both hands, for God hath given it into your hand, a place where there is no lack of anything which in the land.'

Khi anh em vào xứ đó, sẽ đến cùng một dân an ổn. Xứ ấy thật rất rộng, và Đức Chúa Trời đã phó nó vào tay anh em; quả thật một nơi chẳng thiếu vật chi đất sanh sản.

11 A nd there journey thence, of the family of the Danite, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, six hundred men girded with weapons of war.

Vậy, sáu trăm người về dòng Đan cầm binh khí, đi từ Xô-rê -a và Ê-ta-ôn

12 A nd they go up and encamp in Kirjath-Jearim, in Judah, therefore they have called that place, `Camp of Dan,' till this day; lo, behind Kirjath-Jearim.

lên đóng trại tại Ki-ri-át-Giê -a-rim, trong đất Giu-đa; nên chỗ đó hãy còn gọi là trại quân Đan cho đến ngày nay; nó ở phía sau Ki-ri-át-Giê -a-rim.

13 A nd they pass over thence the hill-country of Ephraim, and come in unto the house of Micah.

Từ đó chúng đi sang núi E

14 A nd the five men, those going to traverse the land of Laish, answer and say unto their brethren, `Have ye known that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and graven image, and molten image? and now, know what ye do.'

Bấy giờ, năm người đã đi do thám xứ La-ít cất tiếng nói cùng anh em mình rằng: Trong nhà nầy có một cái ê-phót, những thê-ra-phim, và một tượng chạm với chơn bằng vàng gang; anh em có biết chăng? Vậy, bây giờ hãy xem điều anh em phải làm.

15 A nd they turn aside thither, and come in unto the house of the young man the Levite, the house of Micah, and ask of him of welfare, --

Chúng bèn lại gần, vào nhà người Lê-vi trẻ tuổi, tức là vào nhà của Mi-ca, và chào người.

16 ( and the six hundred men girded with their weapons of war, who of the sons of Dan, are standing at the opening of the gate), --

Sáu trăm người về dòng Đan cầm binh khí giữ ở ngoài cửa.

17 y ea, the five men, those going to traverse the land, go up -- they have come in thither -- they have taken the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image -- and the priest is standing at the opening of the gate, and the six hundred men who are girded with weapons of war --

Nhưng năm người đã đi do thám xứ, đi lên, vào nhà, và cướp lấy tượng chạm, chơn bằng gang, ê-phót, và những thê-ra-phim, đương khi thầy tế lễ đứng tại cửa cùng sáu trăm người cầm binh khí.

18 y ea, these have entered the house of Micah, and take the graven image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image; and the priest saith unto them, `What are ye doing?'

Năm người đó vào nhà cướp lấy các vật ấy rồi, thầy tế lễ bèn hỏi chúng rằng: Các ngươi làm chi vậy?

19 a nd they say to him, `Keep silent, lay thy hand on thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us for a father and for a priest: is it better thy being a priest to the house of one man, or thy being priest to a tribe and to a family in Israel?'

Chúng đáp rằng: Hãy nín đi, lấy tay bụm miệng lại, và đến cùng chúng ta, làm cha và thầy tế lễ cho chúng ta. Ngươi làm thầy tế lễ cho một nhà, hay là làm thầy tế lễ cho một chi phái, một họ hàng trong Y-sơ-ra-ên, điều nào khá hơn?

20 A nd the heart of the priest is glad, and he taketh the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and goeth into the midst of the people,

Thầy tế lễ mừng lòng, lấy ê-phót, những thê-ra-phim, và tượng chạm, rồi nhập với bọn ấy.

21 a nd they turn and go, and put the infants, and the cattle, and the baggage, before them.

Chúng bèn xây lại, lên đường, để cho con trẻ, súc vật, và đồ hành lý đi trước.

22 T hey have been far off from the house of Micah -- and the men who in the houses which near the house of Micah have been called together, and overtake the sons of Dan,

Chúng đã đi xa khỏi nhà Mi-ca rồi, có những kẻ ở gần nhà Mi-ca nhóm lại đuổi theo người Đan.

23 a nd call unto the sons of Dan, and they turn round their faces, and say to Micah, `What -- to thee that thou hast been called together?'

Vì chúng kêu la sau họ, người Đan xây lại mà nói cùng Mi-ca rằng: Ngươi có điều chi? Vì sao ngươi có nhóm lại những kẻ đó?

24 A nd he saith, `My gods which I made ye have taken, and the priest, and ye go; and what to me more? and what this ye say unto me, What -- to thee!'

Mi-ca đáp: Các ngươi đã cướp lấy các thần ta đã làm nên, và luôn thầy tế lễ, mà đi. Còn chi lại cho ta? Sao các ngươi còn hỏi rằng ta có làm điều chi?

25 A nd the sons of Dan say unto him, `Let not thy voice be heard with us, lest men bitter in soul fall upon you, and thou hast gathered thy life, and the life of thy household;'

Người Đan đáp cùng Mi-ca rằng: Chớ cho ta nghe tiếng ngươi nữa, e có ngươi nổi giận xông hãm các ngươi, làm cho ngươi và nhà ngươi đều bị mất sự sống chăng.

26 a nd the sons of Dan go on their way, and Micah seeth that they are stronger than he, and turneth, and goeth back unto his house.

Bấy giờ người Đan cứ đi đường, còn Mi-ca thấy chúng mạnh hơn mình, bèn trở về nhà mình.

27 A nd they have taken that which Micah had made, and the priest whom he had, and come in against Laish, against a people quiet and confident, and smite them by the mouth of the sword, and the city have burnt with fire,

Aáy vậy, sau khi đã cướp lấy vật của Mi-ca đã chế ra, và thầy tế lễ người đã có trong nhà mình, thì chúng xông vào dân La-ít, là một dân ở bình tịnh, vững chắc, lấy gươm giết dân đó, rồi châm lửa đốt thành.

28 a nd there is no deliverer, for it far off from Zidon, and they have no word with man, and it in the valley which by Beth-Rehob; and they build the city, and dwell in it,

Chẳng có ai đến tiếp cứu dân La-ít, vì thành ở xa Si-đôn, và không giao thiệp với ai hết; nó ở trong trũng chạy về hướng Bết-Rê-hóp. Người Đan xây đắp thành lại, và ở lại đó;

29 a nd call the name of the city Dan, by the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel; and yet Laish the name of the city at the first.

lấy tên Đan, là tổ phụ mình, con trai của Y-sơ-ra-ên, mà đặt cho thành; còn trước kia tên thành ấy là La-ít.

30 A nd the sons of Dan raise up for themselves the graven image, and Jonathan son of Gershom, son of Manasseh, he and his sons have been priests to the tribe of the Danite, till the day of the removal of of the land.

Đoạn, người Đan dựng tượng chạm, rồi Giô-na-than, con trai Ghẹt-sôn, cháu Môi-se, và hết thảy hậu tự của người, đều làm thầy tế lễ trong chi phái Đan cho đến ngày chúng bị lưu đày khỏi xứ.

31 A nd they appoint for them the graven image of Micah, which he had made, all the days of the house of God being in Shiloh.

Chúng giữ tượng chạm của Mi-ca làm nên trọn trong lúc đền của Đức Chúa Trời ở tại Si-lô.
