When the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming by the way of Atharim, then he fought against Israel and took some of them captive.

2 S o Israel made a promise to the Lord, and said, “If You will give this people into my hand, I will destroy every part of their cities.”

So Israel made a vow to the Lord and said, “If You will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.”

3 T he Lord heard the voice of Israel, and gave them the Canaanites. Then Israel destroyed all of them and their cities. So the name of the place was called Hormah. The Brass Snake

The Lord heard the voice of Israel and delivered up the Canaanites; then they utterly destroyed them and their cities. Thus the name of the place was called Hormah.

4 T hen they traveled from Mount Hor by the way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people wanted to give up because of the long way.

Then they set out from Mount Hor by the way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; and the people became impatient because of the journey.

5 T hey spoke against God and Moses, saying, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the desert? For there is no food and no water. And we hate this bad food.”

The people spoke against God and Moses, “ Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this miserable food.” The Bronze Serpent

6 T hen the Lord sent snakes with a bite of poison among the people. They bit the people, so that many people of Israel died.

The Lord sent fiery serpents among the people and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died.

7 S o the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and you. Pray to the Lord, that He will take away the snakes from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.

So the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and you; intercede with the Lord, that He may remove the serpents from us.” And Moses interceded for the people.

8 T he Lord said to Moses, “Make a special snake and put it up on a long piece of wood. Everyone who is bitten will live when he looks at it.”

Then the Lord said to Moses, “ Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a standard; and it shall come about, that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, he will live.”

9 S o Moses made a brass snake and put it up on the long piece of wood. If a snake bit any man, he would live when he looked at the brass snake. From Mount Hor to Moab

And Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on the standard; and it came about, that if a serpent bit any man, when he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived.

10 T he people of Israel traveled on, and set up their tents in Oboth.

Now the sons of Israel moved out and camped in Oboth.

11 T hen they left Oboth and stopped at Iye-abarim, in the desert beside Moab, to the east.

They journeyed from Oboth and camped at Iye-abarim, in the wilderness which is opposite Moab, to the east.

12 F rom there they traveled on to Wadi Zered.

From there they set out and camped in Wadi Zered.

13 A nd from there they traveled on and set up their tents on the other side of the Arnon. It is in the desert that goes out from the land of the Amorites. For the Arnon is the side of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

From there they journeyed and camped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that comes out of the border of the Amorites, for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

14 S o it is said in the Book of the Wars of the Lord: “Waheb in Suphah, and the valleys of the Arnon,

Therefore it is said in the Book of the Wars of the Lord, “Waheb in Suphah, And the wadis of the Arnon,

15 a nd the hill-side of the valleys that goes to the place of Ar, and rests on the side of Moab.”

And the slope of the wadis That extends to the site of Ar, And leans to the border of Moab.”

16 F rom there they went on to Beer. That is the well where the Lord said to Moses, “Gather the people together, so I may give them water.”

From there they continued to Beer, that is the well where the Lord said to Moses, “Assemble the people, that I may give them water.”

21 T hen Israel sent men to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, saying,

22 Let me pass through your land. We will not turn aside into field or vines. We will not drink water from wells. We will go on the king’s road until we have passed through your country.”

“ Let me pass through your land. We will not turn off into field or vineyard; we will not drink water from wells. We will go by the king’s highway until we have passed through your border.”

23 B ut Sihon would not let Israel pass through his country. He gathered all his people and went out against Israel in the desert. He came to Jahaz and fought against Israel.

But Sihon would not permit Israel to pass through his border. So Sihon gathered all his people and went out against Israel in the wilderness, and came to Jahaz and fought against Israel.

24 T hen Israel killed Sihon with the sword. They took his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the people of Ammon. For Jazer was the side of the land of the Ammonites.

Then Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the sons of Ammon; for the border of the sons of Ammon was Jazer.

25 I srael took all these cities. They lived in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its towns.

Israel took all these cities and Israel lived in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all her villages.

26 F or Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites. He had fought against the man who was once the king of Moab, and had taken all his land as far as the Arnon.

For Heshbon was the city of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and had taken all his land out of his hand, as far as the Arnon.

27 S o those who use wise sayings say, “Come to Heshbon! Let it be built! Let the city of Sihon be built.

Therefore those who use proverbs say, “Come to Heshbon! Let it be built! So let the city of Sihon be established.

28 F or a fire went out from Heshbon, fire from the city of Sihon. It burned up Ar of Moab, and the lords of the high places of the Arnon.

“ For a fire went forth from Heshbon, A flame from the town of Sihon; It devoured Ar of Moab, The dominant heights of the Arnon.

29 I t is bad for you, O Moab! You are destroyed, O people of Chemosh! His sons run for their lives. His daughters have been taken against their will by an Amorite king, Sihon.

“ Woe to you, O Moab! You are ruined, O people of Chemosh! He has given his sons as fugitives, And his daughters into captivity, To an Amorite king, Sihon.

30 B ut we have put them down. Heshbon is destroyed as far as Dibon. We have destroyed even to Nophah, which goes to Medeba.”

“But we have cast them down, Heshbon is ruined as far as Dibon, Then we have laid waste even to Nophah, Which reaches to Medeba.”

31 S o Israel lived in the land of the Amorites.

Thus Israel lived in the land of the Amorites.

32 T hen Moses sent men to spy out Jazer in secret. And Israel took its towns and took the place of the Amorites who were there. King Og Killed

Moses sent to spy out Jazer, and they captured its villages and dispossessed the Amorites who were there.

Then they turned and went up by the way of Bashan, and Og the king of Bashan went out with all his people, for battle at Edrei.

34 B ut the Lord said to Moses, “Do not be afraid of him. For I have given him into your hand, with all his people and his land. Do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites who lived at Heshbon.”

But the Lord said to Moses, “ Do not fear him, for I have given him into your hand, and all his people and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.”

35 S o the people of Israel killed Og and his sons and all his people, until there was not one left alive. And they took his land.

So they killed him and his sons and all his people, until there was no remnant left him; and they possessed his land.
