To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 A s I exhorted thee to tarry at Ephesus, when I was going into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge certain men not to teach a different doctrine,
As I urged you upon my departure for Macedonia, remain on at Ephesus so that you may instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines,
4 n either to give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questionings, rather than a dispensation of God which is in faith; so do I now.
nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith.
5 B ut the end of the charge is love out of a pure heart and a good conscience and faith unfeigned:
But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.

For some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion,
7 d esiring to be teachers of the law, though they understand neither what they say, nor whereof they confidently affirm.
wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.
8 B ut we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully,
But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully,
9 a s knowing this, that law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and unruly, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers

12 I thank him that enabled me, even Christ Jesus our Lord, for that he counted me faithful, appointing me to his service;
I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service,
13 t hough I was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: howbeit I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief;
even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor. Yet I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief;
14 a nd the grace of our Lord abounded exceedingly with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
and the grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus.
15 F aithful is the saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief:
It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all.
16 h owbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me as chief might Jesus Christ show forth all his longsuffering, for an ensample of them that should thereafter believe on him unto eternal life.
Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life.

19 h olding faith and a good conscience; which some having thrust from them made shipwreck concerning the faith:
keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith.
