1 A nd it came to pass soon afterwards, that he went about through cities and villages, preaching and bringing the good tidings of the kingdom of God, and with him the twelve,

Soon afterwards, He began going around from one city and village to another, proclaiming and preaching the kingdom of God. The twelve were with Him,

2 a nd certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary that was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,

and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,

3 a nd Joanna the wife of Chuzas Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, who ministered unto them of their substance.

and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others who were contributing to their support out of their private means. Parable of the Sower

4 A nd when a great multitude came together, and they of every city resorted unto him, he spake by a parable:

When a large crowd was coming together, and those from the various cities were journeying to Him, He spoke by way of a parable:

5 T he sower went forth to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden under foot, and the birds of the heaven devoured it.

“The sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell beside the road, and it was trampled under foot and the birds of the air ate it up.

6 A nd other fell on the rock; and as soon as it grew, it withered away, because it had no moisture.

Other seed fell on rocky soil, and as soon as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture.

7 A nd other fell amidst the thorns; and the thorns grew with it, and choked it.

Other seed fell among the thorns; and the thorns grew up with it and choked it out.

8 A nd other fell into the good ground, and grew, and brought forth fruit a hundredfold. As he said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Other seed fell into the good soil, and grew up, and produced a crop a hundred times as great.” As He said these things, He would call out, “ He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

9 A nd his disciples asked him what this parable might be.

His disciples began questioning Him as to what this parable meant.

10 A nd he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to the rest in parables; that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.

And He said, “ To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.

11 N ow the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.

“Now the parable is this: the seed is the word of God.

12 A nd those by the way side are they that have heard; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word from their heart, that they may not believe and be saved.

Those beside the road are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they will not believe and be saved.

13 A nd those on the rock are they who, when they have heard, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.

Those on the rocky soil are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no firm root; they believe for a while, and in time of temptation fall away.

14 A nd that which fell among the thorns, these are they that have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.

The seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with worries and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity.

15 A nd that in the good ground, these are such as in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, hold it fast, and bring forth fruit with patience.

But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance. Parable of the Lamp

16 A nd no man, when he hath lighted a lamp, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but putteth it on a stand, that they that enter in may see the light.

“Now no one after lighting a lamp covers it over with a container, or puts it under a bed; but he puts it on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see the light.

17 F or nothing is hid, that shall not be made manifest; nor anything secret, that shall not be known and come to light.

For nothing is hidden that will not become evident, nor anything secret that will not be known and come to light.

18 T ake heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that which he thinketh he hath.

So take care how you listen; for whoever has, to him more shall be given; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has shall be taken away from him.”

19 A nd there came to him his mother and brethren, and they could not come at him for the crowd.

And His mother and brothers came to Him, and they were unable to get to Him because of the crowd.

20 A nd it was told him, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee.

And it was reported to Him, “Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, wishing to see You.”

21 B ut he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these that hear the word of God, and do it.

But He answered and said to them, “My mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it.” Jesus Stills the Sea

22 N ow it came to pass on one of those days, that he entered into a boat, himself and his disciples; and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake: and they launched forth.

Now on one of those days Jesus and His disciples got into a boat, and He said to them, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they launched out.

23 B ut as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filling with water, and were in jeopardy.

But as they were sailing along He fell asleep; and a fierce gale of wind descended on the lake, and they began to be swamped and to be in danger.

24 A nd they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. And he awoke, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.

They came to Jesus and woke Him up, saying, “ Master, Master, we are perishing!” And He got up and rebuked the wind and the surging waves, and they stopped, and it became calm.

25 A nd he said unto them, Where is your faith? And being afraid they marvelled, saying one to another, Who then is this, that he commandeth even the winds and the water, and they obey him?

And He said to them, “Where is your faith?” They were fearful and amazed, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?” The Demoniac Cured

26 A nd they arrived at the country of the Gerasenes, which is over against Galilee.

Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.

27 A nd when he was come forth upon the land, there met him a certain man out of the city, who had demons; and for a long time he had worn no clothes, and abode not in any house, but in the tombs.

And when He came out onto the land, He was met by a man from the city who was possessed with demons; and who had not put on any clothing for a long time, and was not living in a house, but in the tombs.

28 A nd when he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the Most High God? I beseech thee, torment me not.

Seeing Jesus, he cried out and fell before Him, and said in a loud voice, “ What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me.”

29 F or he was commanding the unclean spirit to come out from the man. For oftentimes it had seized him: and he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters; and breaking the bands asunder, he was driven of the demon into the deserts.

For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had seized him many times; and he was bound with chains and shackles and kept under guard, and yet he would break his bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert.

30 A nd Jesus asked him, What is thy name? And he said, Legion; for many demons were entered into him.

And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “ Legion”; for many demons had entered him.

31 A nd they entreated him that he would not command them to depart into the abyss.

They were imploring Him not to command them to go away into the abyss.

32 N ow there was there a herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they entreated him that he would give them leave to enter into them. And he gave them leave.

Now there was a herd of many swine feeding there on the mountain; and the demons implored Him to permit them to enter the swine. And He gave them permission.

33 A nd the demons came out from the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd rushed down the steep into the lake, and were drowned.

And the demons came out of the man and entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.

34 A nd when they that fed them saw what had come to pass, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country.

When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they ran away and reported it in the city and out in the country.

35 A nd they went out to see what had come to pass; and they came to Jesus, and found the man, from whom the demons were gone out, sitting, clothed and in his right mind, at the feet of Jesus: and they were afraid.

The people went out to see what had happened; and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting down at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they became frightened.

36 A nd they that saw it told them how he that was possessed with demons was made whole.

Those who had seen it reported to them how the man who was demon-possessed had been made well.

37 A nd all the people of the country of the Gerasenes round about asked him to depart from them, for they were holden with great fear: and he entered into a boat, and returned.

And all the people of the country of the Gerasenes and the surrounding district asked Him to leave them, for they were gripped with great fear; and He got into a boat and returned.

38 B ut the man from whom the demons were gone out prayed him that he might be with him: but he sent him away, saying,

But the man from whom the demons had gone out was begging Him that he might accompany Him; but He sent him away, saying,

39 R eturn to thy house, and declare how great things God hath done for thee. And he went his way, publishing throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done for him.

“Return to your house and describe what great things God has done for you.” So he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him. Miracles of Healing

40 A nd as Jesus returned, the multitude welcomed him; for they were all waiting for him.

And as Jesus returned, the people welcomed Him, for they had all been waiting for Him.

41 A nd behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him to come into his house;

And there came a man named Jairus, and he was an official of the synagogue; and he fell at Jesus’ feet, and began to implore Him to come to his house;

42 f or he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. But as he went the multitudes thronged him.

for he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. But as He went, the crowds were pressing against Him.

43 A nd a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, who had spent all her living upon physicians, and could not be healed of any,

And a woman who had a hemorrhage for twelve years, and could not be healed by anyone,

44 c ame behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately the issue of her blood stanched.

came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His cloak, and immediately her hemorrhage stopped.

45 A nd Jesus said, Who is it that touched me? And when all denied, Peter said, and they that were with him, Master, the multitudes press thee and crush thee.

And Jesus said, “Who is the one who touched Me?” And while they were all denying it, Peter said, “ Master, the people are crowding and pressing in on You.”

46 B ut Jesus said, Some one did touch me; for I perceived that power had gone forth from me.

But Jesus said, “Someone did touch Me, for I was aware that power had gone out of Me.”

47 A nd when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people for what cause she touched him, and how she was healed immediately.

When the woman saw that she had not escaped notice, she came trembling and fell down before Him, and declared in the presence of all the people the reason why she had touched Him, and how she had been immediately healed.

48 A nd he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.

And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”

49 W hile he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Teacher.

While He was still speaking, someone came from the house of the synagogue official, saying, “Your daughter has died; do not trouble the Teacher anymore.”

50 B ut Jesus hearing it, answered him, Fear not: only believe, and she shall be made whole.

But when Jesus heard this, He answered him, “ Do not be afraid any longer; only believe, and she will be made well.”

51 A nd when he came to the house, he suffered not any man to enter in with him, save Peter, and John, and James, and the father of the maiden and her mother.

When He came to the house, He did not allow anyone to enter with Him, except Peter and John and James, and the girl’s father and mother.

52 A nd all were weeping, and bewailing her: but he said, Weep not; for she is not dead, but sleepeth.

Now they were all weeping and lamenting for her; but He said, “Stop weeping, for she has not died, but is asleep.”

53 A nd they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead.

And they began laughing at Him, knowing that she had died.

54 B ut he, taking her by the hand, called, saying, Maiden, arise.

He, however, took her by the hand and called, saying, “Child, arise!”

55 A nd her spirit returned, and she rose up immediately: and he commanded that something be given her to eat.

And her spirit returned, and she got up immediately; and He gave orders for something to be given her to eat.

56 A nd her parents were amazed: but he charged them to tell no man what had been done.

Her parents were amazed; but He instructed them to tell no one what had happened.
