Mark 10 ~ Mark 10

picture

1 A nd he arose from thence and cometh into the borders of Judaea and beyond the Jordan: and multitudes come together unto him again; and, as he was wont, he taught them again.

Getting up, He went from there to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan; crowds gathered around Him again, and, according to His custom, He once more began to teach them.

2 A nd there came unto him Pharisees, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? trying him.

Some Pharisees came up to Jesus, testing Him, and began to question Him whether it was lawful for a man to divorce a wife.

3 A nd he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?

And He answered and said to them, “What did Moses command you?”

4 A nd they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away.

They said, “ Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.”

5 B ut Jesus said unto them, For your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment.

But Jesus said to them, “ Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment.

6 B ut from the beginning of the creation, Male and female made he them.

But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female.

7 F or this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife;

For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother,

8 a nd the two shall become one flesh: so that they are no more two, but one flesh.

and the two shall become one flesh; so they are no longer two, but one flesh.

9 W hat therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.”

10 A nd in the house the disciples asked him again of this matter.

In the house the disciples began questioning Him about this again.

11 A nd he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her:

And He said to them, “ Whoever divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her;

12 a nd if she herself shall put away her husband, and marry another, she committeth adultery.

and if she herself divorces her husband and marries another man, she is committing adultery.” Jesus Blesses Little Children

13 A nd they were bringing unto him little children, that he should touch them: and the disciples rebuked them.

And they were bringing children to Him so that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked them.

14 B ut when Jesus saw it, he was moved with indignation, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me; forbid them not: for to such belongeth the kingdom of God.

But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, “Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

15 V erily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall in no wise enter therein.

Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.”

16 A nd he took them in his arms, and blessed them, laying his hands upon them.

And He took them in His arms and began blessing them, laying His hands on them. The Rich Young Ruler

17 A nd as he was going forth into the way, there ran one to him, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?

As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

18 A nd Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good save one, even God.

And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone.

19 T hou knowest the commandments, Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor thy father and mother.

You know the commandments, ‘ Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’”

20 A nd he said unto him, Teacher, all these things have I observed from my youth.

And he said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept all these things from my youth up.”

21 A nd Jesus looking upon him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.

Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

22 B ut his countenance fell at the saying, and he went away sorrowful: for he was one that had great possessions.

But at these words he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who owned much property.

23 A nd Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

And Jesus, looking around, said to His disciples, “ How hard it will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!”

24 A nd the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!

The disciples were amazed at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!

25 I t is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 A nd they were astonished exceedingly, saying unto him, Then who can be saved?

They were even more astonished and said to Him, “ Then who can be saved?”

27 J esus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for all things are possible with God.

Looking at them, Jesus said, “ With people it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.”

28 P eter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee.

Peter began to say to Him, “Behold, we have left everything and followed You.”

29 J esus said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or mother, or father, or children, or lands, for my sake, and for the gospel's sake,

Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel’s sake,

30 b ut he shall receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.

but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life.

31 B ut many that are first shall be last; and the last first.

But many who are first will be last, and the last, first.” Jesus’ Sufferings Foretold

32 A nd they were on the way, going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus was going before them: and they were amazed; and they that followed were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them the things that were to happen unto him,

They were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking on ahead of them; and they were amazed, and those who followed were fearful. And again He took the twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to Him,

33 s aying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests and the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him unto the Gentiles:

saying, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will hand Him over to the Gentiles.

34 a nd they shall mock him, and shall spit upon him, and shall scourge him, and shall kill him; and after three days he shall rise again.

They will mock Him and spit on Him, and scourge Him and kill Him, and three days later He will rise again.”

35 A nd there come near unto him James and John, the sons of Zebedee, saying unto him, Teacher, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall ask of thee.

James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, came up to Jesus, saying, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You.”

36 A nd he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you?

And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?”

37 A nd they said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and one on thy left hand, in thy glory.

They said to Him, “ Grant that we may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory.”

38 B ut Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink the cup that I drink? or to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?

But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?”

39 A nd they said unto him, We are able. And Jesus said unto them, The cup that I drink ye shall drink; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized:

They said to Him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized.

40 b ut to sit on my right hand or on my left hand is not mine to give; but it is for them for whom it hath been prepared.

But to sit on My right or on My left, this is not Mine to give; but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”

41 A nd when the ten heard it, they began to be moved with indignation concerning James and John.

Hearing this, the ten began to feel indignant with James and John.

42 A nd Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they who are accounted to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them; and their great ones exercise authority over them.

Calling them to Himself, Jesus said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them; and their great men exercise authority over them.

43 B ut it is not so among you: but whosoever would become great among you, shall be your minister;

But it is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant;

44 a nd whosoever would be first among you, shall be servant of all.

and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all.

45 F or the Son of man also came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Bartimaeus Receives His Sight

46 A nd they come to Jericho: and as he went out from Jericho, with his disciples and a great multitude, the son of Timaeus, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the way side.

Then they came to Jericho. And as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the road.

47 A nd when he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me.

When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

48 A nd many rebuked him, that he should hold his peace: but he cried out the more a great deal, Thou son of David, have mercy on me.

Many were sternly telling him to be quiet, but he kept crying out all the more, “ Son of David, have mercy on me!”

49 A nd Jesus stood still, and said, Call ye him. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good cheer: rise, he calleth thee.

And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him here.” So they called the blind man, saying to him, “ Take courage, stand up! He is calling for you.”

50 A nd he, casting away his garment, sprang up, and came to Jesus.

Throwing aside his cloak, he jumped up and came to Jesus.

51 A nd Jesus answered him, and said, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? And the blind man said unto him, Rabboni, that I may receive my sight.

And answering him, Jesus said, “What do you want Me to do for you?” And the blind man said to Him, “ Rabboni, I want to regain my sight!”

52 A nd Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And straightway he received his sight, and followed him in the way.

And Jesus said to him, “Go; your faith has made you well.” Immediately he regained his sight and began following Him on the road.
