1 T he proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

¶ A wise son makes a glad father; but a foolish son is sadness unto his mother.

2 T reasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death.

¶ Treasures of wickedness profit nothing, but righteousness delivers from death.

3 T he Lord will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.

The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish, but wickedness shall cast out the wicked.

4 H e becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

¶ He that deals with a slack hand becomes poor, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.

5 H e that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.

¶ He that gathers in summer is a wise son, but he that sleeps in harvest is a son that causes shame.

6 B lessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

¶ Blessings are upon the head of the just, but the mouth of the wicked covers violence.

7 T he memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.

¶ The memory of the just is blessed, but the name of the wicked shall stink.

8 T he wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.

¶ The wise in heart will receive the commandments, but he who speaks foolishness shall fall.

9 H e that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.

¶ He that walks in integrity walks securely, but he that perverts his ways shall be broken.

10 H e that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall.

¶ He that winks with the eye causes sorrow, and he that speaks foolishness shall fall.

11 T he mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

¶ The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life, but the mouth of the wicked covers violence.

12 H atred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.

¶ Hatred stirs up strifes, but love covers all sins.

13 I n the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.

¶ In the lips of the prudent wisdom is found and is a rod unto the back of him that is void of understanding.

14 W ise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.

¶ Wise men keep knowledge, but the mouth of the foolish is near unto calamity.

15 T he rich man's wealth is his strong city: the destruction of the poor is their poverty.

¶ The rich man’s wealth is his strong city; the weakness of the poor is their poverty.

16 T he labour of the righteous tendeth to life: the fruit of the wicked to sin.

¶ The work of the righteous is unto life, but the fruit of the wicked is for sin.

17 H e is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth.

¶ He is in the way of life that gives heed to chastening, but he that refuses reproof errs.

18 H e that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.

¶ He that hides hatred has lying lips, and he that utters a slander, is a fool.

19 I n the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.

¶ In the multitude of words there is no lack of rebellion, but he that refrains his lips is wise.

20 T he tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.

¶ The tongue of the just is as choice silver, but the understanding of the wicked is worth little.

21 T he lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.

The lips of the righteous feed many, but fools die for lack of wisdom.

22 T he blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.

¶ The blessing of the LORD is that which makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.

23 I t is as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.

¶ To make an abomination is as sport to the fool, but wisdom is recreation to the man of intelligence.

24 T he fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him: but the desire of the righteous shall be granted.

¶ The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him, but God shall grant the desire of the righteous.

25 A s the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.

When the whirlwind passes, the wicked is no more, but the righteous is founded for ever.

26 A s vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.

¶ As vinegar to the teeth and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to those that send him.

27 T he fear of the Lord prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

¶ The fear of the LORD shall prolong days, but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

28 T he hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.

The hope of the righteous is joy, but the hope of the wicked shall perish.

29 T he way of the Lord is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.

¶ The way of the LORD is strength to the perfect, but it is terror to the workers of iniquity.

30 T he righteous shall never be removed: but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.

The righteous eternally shall never be removed, but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.

31 T he mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.

¶ The mouth of the just shall bring forth wisdom, but the perverse tongue shall be cut out.

32 T he lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.

The lips of the righteous shall know the will of God, but the mouth of the wicked speaks perversion.
