1 B ut speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine.
2 t hat the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance.
3 T he aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good,
4 t hat they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,
5 t o be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.
6 Y oung men likewise exhort to be sober minded.
Likewise urge the young men to be sensible;
7 I n all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,
in all things show yourself to be an example of good deeds, with purity in doctrine, dignified,
8 s ound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.
sound in speech which is beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us.
9 E xhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again;
Urge bondslaves to be subject to their own masters in everything, to be well-pleasing, not argumentative,
10 n ot purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.
not pilfering, but showing all good faith so that they will adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in every respect.
11 F or the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men,
12 t eaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age,
13 l ooking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus,
14 w ho gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.
15 T hese things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.
These things speak and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you.
