1 A nd the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:

On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there;

2 a nd both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.

and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.

3 A nd when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.

When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”

4 J esus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.

And Jesus said to her, “ Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.”

5 H is mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”

6 A nd there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.

Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each.

7 J esus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.

Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim.

8 A nd he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.

And He said to them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it to him.

9 W hen the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,

When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom,

10 a nd saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.

and said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.”

11 T his beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

12 A fter this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days.

After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother and His brothers and His disciples; and they stayed there a few days. First Passover—Cleansing the Temple

13 A nd the Jews’ passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem,

The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

14 a nd found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:

And He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables.

15 a nd when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables;

And He made a scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables;

16 a nd said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.

and to those who were selling the doves He said, “Take these things away; stop making My Father’s house a place of business.”

17 A nd his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.

His disciples remembered that it was written, “ Zeal for Your house will consume me.”

18 T hen answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?

The Jews then said to Him, “ What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?”

19 J esus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

Jesus answered them, “ Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”

20 T hen said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?

The Jews then said, “It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?”

21 B ut he spake of the temple of his body.

But He was speaking of the temple of His body.

22 W hen therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.

So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.

23 N ow when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.

Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, observing His signs which He was doing.

24 B ut Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men,

But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men,

25 a nd needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man.
