1 A nd it came to pass after these things, that the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt.

Then it came about after these things, the cupbearer and the baker for the king of Egypt offended their lord, the king of Egypt.

2 A nd Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers.

Pharaoh was furious with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker.

3 A nd he put them in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound.

So he put them in confinement in the house of the captain of the bodyguard, in the jail, the same place where Joseph was imprisoned.

4 A nd the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them: and they continued a season in ward.

The captain of the bodyguard put Joseph in charge of them, and he took care of them; and they were in confinement for some time.

5 A nd they dreamed a dream both of them, each man his dream in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, which were bound in the prison.

Then the cupbearer and the baker for the king of Egypt, who were confined in jail, both had a dream the same night, each man with his own dream and each dream with its own interpretation.

6 A nd Joseph came in unto them in the morning, and looked upon them, and, behold, they were sad.

When Joseph came to them in the morning and observed them, behold, they were dejected.

7 A nd he asked Pharaoh’s officers that were with him in the ward of his lord’s house, saying, Wherefore look ye so sadly to day?

He asked Pharaoh’s officials who were with him in confinement in his master’s house, “ Why are your faces so sad today?”

8 A nd they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, Do not interpretations belong to God? tell me them, I pray you.

Then they said to him, “ We have had a dream and there is no one to interpret it.” Then Joseph said to them, “ Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell it to me, please.”

9 A nd the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine was before me;

So the chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, “In my dream, behold, there was a vine in front of me;

10 a nd in the vine were three branches: and it was as though it budded, and her blossoms shot forth; and the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes:

and on the vine were three branches. And as it was budding, its blossoms came out, and its clusters produced ripe grapes.

11 a nd Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand: and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand.

Now Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand; so I took the grapes and squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and I put the cup into Pharaoh’s hand.”

12 A nd Joseph said unto him, This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are three days:

Then Joseph said to him, “This is the interpretation of it: the three branches are three days;

13 y et within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thine head, and restore thee unto thy place: and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh’s cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou wast his butler.

within three more days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your office; and you will put Pharaoh’s cup into his hand according to your former custom when you were his cupbearer.

14 B ut think on me when it shall be well with thee, and shew kindness, I pray thee, unto me, and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house:

Only keep me in mind when it goes well with you, and please do me a kindness by mentioning me to Pharaoh and get me out of this house.

15 f or indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews: and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.

For I was in fact kidnapped from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing that they should have put me into the dungeon.”

16 W hen the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said unto Joseph, I also was in my dream, and, behold, I had three white baskets on my head:

When the chief baker saw that he had interpreted favorably, he said to Joseph, “I also saw in my dream, and behold, there were three baskets of white bread on my head;

17 a nd in the uppermost basket there was of all manner of bakemeats for Pharaoh; and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head.

and in the top basket there were some of all sorts of baked food for Pharaoh, and the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head.”

18 A nd Joseph answered and said, This is the interpretation thereof: The three baskets are three days:

Then Joseph answered and said, “This is its interpretation: the three baskets are three days;

19 y et within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds shall eat thy flesh from off thee.

within three more days Pharaoh will lift up your head from you and will hang you on a tree, and the birds will eat your flesh off you.”

20 A nd it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a feast unto all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants.

Thus it came about on the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a feast for all his servants; and he lifted up the head of the chief cupbearer and the head of the chief baker among his servants.

21 A nd he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand:

He restored the chief cupbearer to his office, and he put the cup into Pharaoh’s hand;

22 b ut he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them.

but he hanged the chief baker, just as Joseph had interpreted to them.

23 Y et did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him.

Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.
