1 A nd it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judæa beyond Jordan;

When Jesus had finished these words, He departed from Galilee and came into the region of Judea beyond the Jordan;

2 a nd great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.

and large crowds followed Him, and He healed them there.

3 T he Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?

Some Pharisees came to Jesus, testing Him and asking, “ Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all?”

4 A nd he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,

And He answered and said, “Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female,

5 a nd said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

and said, ‘ For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh ’?

6 W herefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.”

7 T hey say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?

They said to Him, “ Why then did Moses command to give her a certificate of divorce and send her away ?”

8 H e saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.

He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce your wives; but from the beginning it has not been this way.

9 A nd I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.

And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

10 H is disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.

The disciples said to Him, “If the relationship of the man with his wife is like this, it is better not to marry.”

11 B ut he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.

But He said to them, “ Not all men can accept this statement, but only those to whom it has been given.

12 F or there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother’s womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother’s womb; and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men; and there are also eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to accept this, let him accept it.” Jesus Blesses Little Children

13 T hen were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.

Then some children were brought to Him so that He might lay His hands on them and pray; and the disciples rebuked them.

14 B ut Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.

But Jesus said, “ Let the children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

15 A nd he laid his hands on them, and departed thence.

After laying His hands on them, He departed from there. The Rich Young Ruler

16 A nd, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?

And someone came to Him and said, “Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?”

17 A nd he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

And He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.”

18 H e saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,

Then he said to Him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “ You shall not commit murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness;

19 H onour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Honor your father and mother; and You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

20 T he young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?

The young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept; what am I still lacking?”

21 J esus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

22 B ut when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.

23 T hen said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.

And Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.

24 A nd again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

25 W hen his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?

When the disciples heard this, they were very astonished and said, “Then who can be saved?”

26 B ut Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

And looking at them Jesus said to them, “ With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” The Disciples’ Reward

27 T hen answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?

Then Peter said to Him, “Behold, we have left everything and followed You; what then will there be for us?”

28 A nd Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

And Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on His glorious throne, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

29 A nd every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.

And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name’s sake, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life.

30 B ut many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.

But many who are first will be last; and the last, first.
