1 N ow after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the Lord, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?

Now it came about after the death of Joshua that the sons of Israel inquired of the Lord, saying, “Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?”

2 A nd the Lord said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

The Lord said, “ Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand.”

3 A nd Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.

Then Judah said to Simeon his brother, “Come up with me into the territory allotted me, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I in turn will go with you into the territory allotted you.” So Simeon went with him.

4 A nd Judah went up; and the Lord delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.

Judah went up, and the Lord gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hands, and they defeated ten thousand men at Bezek.

5 A nd they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

They found Adoni-bezek in Bezek and fought against him, and they defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

6 B ut Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and big toes.

7 A nd Adoni-bezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.

Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and their big toes cut off used to gather up scraps under my table; as I have done, so God has repaid me.” So they brought him to Jerusalem and he died there.

8 N ow the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.

Then the sons of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword and set the city on fire.

9 A nd afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.

Afterward the sons of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites living in the hill country and in the Negev and in the lowland.

10 A nd Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-arba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

So Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron (now the name of Hebron formerly was Kiriath-arba); and they struck Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai. Capture of Other Cities

11 A nd from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher:

Then from there he went against the inhabitants of Debir (now the name of Debir formerly was Kiriath-sepher).

12 A nd Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.

And Caleb said, “The one who attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will even give him my daughter Achsah for a wife.”

13 A nd Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.

Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, captured it; so he gave him his daughter Achsah for a wife.

14 A nd it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou?

Then it came about when she came to him, that she persuaded him to ask her father for a field. Then she alighted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you want?”

15 A nd she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.

She said to him, “Give me a blessing, since you have given me the land of the Negev, give me also springs of water.” So Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

16 A nd the children of the Kenite, Moses’ father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.

The descendants of the Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law, went up from the city of palms with the sons of Judah, to the wilderness of Judah which is in the south of Arad; and they went and lived with the people.

17 A nd Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.

Then Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they struck the Canaanites living in Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. So the name of the city was called Hormah.

18 A lso Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Askelon with the coast thereof, and Ekron with the coast thereof.

And Judah took Gaza with its territory and Ashkelon with its territory and Ekron with its territory.

19 A nd the Lord was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

Now the Lord was with Judah, and they took possession of the hill country; but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley because they had iron chariots.

20 A nd they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak.

Then they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had promised; and he drove out from there the three sons of Anak.

21 A nd the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.

But the sons of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem; so the Jebusites have lived with the sons of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

22 A nd the house of Joseph, they also went up against Beth-el: and the Lord was with them.

Likewise the house of Joseph went up against Bethel, and the Lord was with them.

23 A nd the house of Joseph sent to descry Beth-el. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.)

The house of Joseph spied out Bethel ( now the name of the city was formerly Luz).

24 A nd the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.

The spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, “Please show us the entrance to the city and we will treat you kindly.”

25 A nd when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.

So he showed them the entrance to the city, and they struck the city with the edge of the sword, but they let the man and all his family go free.

26 A nd the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.

The man went into the land of the Hittites and built a city and named it Luz which is its name to this day. Places Not Conquered

27 N either did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

But Manasseh did not take possession of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; so the Canaanites persisted in living in that land.

28 A nd it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.

It came about when Israel became strong, that they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but they did not drive them out completely.

29 N either did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who were living in Gezer; so the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them.

30 N either did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.

Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of Nahalol; so the Canaanites lived among them and became subject to forced labor.

31 N either did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:

Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, or of Achzib, or of Helbah, or of Aphik, or of Rehob.

32 b ut the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.

So the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.

33 N either did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became tributaries unto them.

Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, but lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; and the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath became forced labor for them.

34 A nd the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley:

Then the Amorites forced the sons of Dan into the hill country, for they did not allow them to come down to the valley;

35 b ut the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.

yet the Amorites persisted in living in Mount Heres, in Aijalon and in Shaalbim; but when the power of the house of Joseph grew strong, they became forced labor.

36 A nd the coast of the Amorites was from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.

The border of the Amorites ran from the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward.
