1 And when king Arad, the Canaanite, who dwelt toward the Negev, heard tell that Israel came by the way of the sentinels; then he fought against Israel and took some of them prisoners.

The king of Arad, the Canaanite, who dwelt in the South, heard that Israel was coming on the road to Atharim. Then he fought against Israel and took some of them prisoners.

2 T hen Israel vowed a vow unto the LORD and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.

So Israel made a vow to the Lord, and said, “If You will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.”

3 A nd the LORD hearkened to the voice of Israel and delivered up the Canaanite; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities, and he called the name of the place Hormah.

And the Lord listened to the voice of Israel and delivered up the Canaanites, and they utterly destroyed them and their cities. So the name of that place was called Hormah. The Bronze Serpent

4 And they journeyed from Mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to go around the land of Edom, and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.

Then they journeyed from Mount Hor by the Way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; and the soul of the people became very discouraged on the way.

5 A nd the people spoke against God and against Moses, Why have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loathes this light bread.

And the people spoke against God and against Moses: “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and our soul loathes this worthless bread.”

6 A nd the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many people of Israel died.

So the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many of the people of Israel died.

7 T hen the people came to Moses and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against thee; pray unto the LORD that he take away these serpents from among us. And Moses prayed for the people.

Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord that He take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.

8 A nd the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent and lift it up as a banner, and it shall be that anyone that is bitten and looks upon it shall live.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.”

9 A nd Moses made a serpent of brass and put it up as a banner, and it came to pass that when a serpent bit anyone, he beheld the serpent of brass, and lived.

So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived. From Mount Hor to Moab

10 And the sons of Israel set forward and pitched camp in Oboth.

Now the children of Israel moved on and camped in Oboth.

11 A nd they journeyed from Oboth and pitched at Ijeabarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the rising of the sun.

And they journeyed from Oboth and camped at Ije Abarim, in the wilderness which is east of Moab, toward the sunrise.

12 F rom there they removed and pitched in the valley of Zared.

From there they moved and camped in the Valley of Zered.

13 F rom thence they removed and pitched on the other side of Arnon, which is in the wilderness that comes out of the borders of the Amorite; for Arnon is the border of Moab between Moab and the Amorite.

From there they moved and camped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that extends from the border of the Amorites; for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

14 T herefore it is said in the book of the battles of the LORD, What he did in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon

Therefore it is said in the Book of the Wars of the Lord: “Waheb in Suphah, The brooks of the Arnon,

15 a nd at the stream of the brooks that goes down to the dwelling of Ar, and lies upon the border of Moab.

And the slope of the brooks That reaches to the dwelling of Ar, And lies on the border of Moab.”

16 A nd from there they went to Beer; this is the well of which the LORD spoke unto Moses, Gather the people together, and I will give them water.

From there they went to Beer, which is the well where the Lord said to Moses, “Gather the people together, and I will give them water.”

17 T hen Israel sang this song, Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it.

Then Israel sang this song: “Spring up, O well! All of you sing to it—

18 T he princes dug the well, the willing people dug it, and the lawgiver, with their staves. And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah.

The well the leaders sank, Dug by the nation’s nobles, By the lawgiver, with their staves.” And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah,

19 A nd from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth.

from Mattanah to Nahaliel, from Nahaliel to Bamoth,

20 A nd from Bamoth in the valley, that is in the fields of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looks toward Jeshimon.

and from Bamoth, in the valley that is in the country of Moab, to the top of Pisgah which looks down on the wasteland. King Sihon Defeated

21 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

22 L et me pass through thy land; we will not turn into the fields or into the vineyards; we will not drink of the waters of the wells; but we will go along by the king’s high way until we are past thy borders.

“Let me pass through your land. We will not turn aside into fields or vineyards; we will not drink water from wells. We will go by the King’s Highway until we have passed through your territory.”

23 B ut Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his border; instead Sihon gathered all his people together and went out against Israel into the wilderness; and he came to Jahaz and fought against Israel.

But Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his territory. So Sihon gathered all his people together and went out against Israel in the wilderness, and he came to Jahaz and fought against Israel.

24 A nd Israel smote him with the edge of the sword and possessed his land from Arnon unto Jabbok, even unto the sons of Ammon, for the border of the sons of Ammon was strong.

Then Israel defeated him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the people of Ammon; for the border of the people of Ammon was fortified.

25 A nd Israel took all these cities; and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites in Heshbon and in all the villages thereof.

So Israel took all these cities, and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon and in all its villages.

26 F or Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and taken out of his hand all his land unto Arnon.

For Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and had taken all his land from his hand as far as the Arnon.

27 T herefore those that speak in proverbs say, Come into Heshbon, let the city of Sihon be built and prepared;

Therefore those who speak in proverbs say: “Come to Heshbon, let it be built; Let the city of Sihon be repaired.

28 f or there is a fire gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it has consumed Ar of Moab and the lords of the high places of Arnon.

“For fire went out from Heshbon, A flame from the city of Sihon; It consumed Ar of Moab, The lords of the heights of the Arnon.

29 W oe to thee, Moab! thou art undone, O people of Chemosh; he has put thy sons to flight and thy daughters into captivity because of Sihon king of the Amorites.

Woe to you, Moab! You have perished, O people of Chemosh! He has given his sons as fugitives, And his daughters into captivity, To Sihon king of the Amorites.

30 A nd Heshbon destroyed their kingdom even unto Dibon, and we have laid them waste even unto Nophah and Medeba.

“But we have shot at them; Heshbon has perished as far as Dibon. Then we laid waste as far as Nophah, Which reaches to Medeba.”

31 T hus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorite.

Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.

32 A nd Moses sent to spy out Jaazer, and they took the villages thereof and drove out the Amorite that was there.

Then Moses sent to spy out Jazer; and they took its villages and drove out the Amorites who were there. King Og Defeated

33 A nd they turned and went up by the way of Bashan; and Og, the king of Bashan, went out against them, he and all his people, to the battle at Edrei.

And they turned and went up by the way to Bashan. So Og king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.

34 T hen the LORD said unto Moses, Fear him not, for I have delivered him into thy hand and all his people and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Do not fear him, for I have delivered him into your hand, with all his people and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.”

35 S o they smote him and his sons and all his people until there was none left him alive; and they possessed his land.

So they defeated him, his sons, and all his people, until there was no survivor left him; and they took possession of his land.
