1 Then Joseph fell upon his father’s face and wept upon him and kissed him.

Then Joseph fell on his father’s face, and wept over him, and kissed him.

2 A nd Joseph commanded his slaves, the physicians, to embalm his father; and the physicians embalmed Israel.

And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel.

3 A nd forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those who are embalmed; and the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.

Forty days were required for him, for such are the days required for those who are embalmed; and the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.

4 A nd when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spoke unto those of the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,

Now when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the hearing of Pharaoh, saying,

5 M y father made me swear, saying, Behold, I die; in my grave which I have dug for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee and bury my father, and I will come again.

‘My father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I am dying; in my grave which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me.” Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father, and I will come back.’”

6 A nd Pharaoh said, Go up and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear.

And Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear.”

7 Then Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went up all the slaves of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,

So Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,

8 a nd all the house of Joseph and his brethren and his father’s house; only their little ones and their sheep and their cows, they left in the land of Goshen.

as well as all the house of Joseph, his brothers, and his father’s house. Only their little ones, their flocks, and their herds they left in the land of Goshen.

9 A nd both chariots and horsemen went up with him, and it was a very great company.

And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen, and it was a very great gathering.

10 A nd they came to the threshingfloor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation; and Joseph made a mourning for his father seven days.

Then they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and they mourned there with a great and very solemn lamentation. He observed seven days of mourning for his father.

11 A nd when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a great mourning of the Egyptians; therefore the name of it was called Abelmizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.

And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a deep mourning of the Egyptians.” Therefore its name was called Abel Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.

12 A nd his sons did unto him according as he commanded them;

So his sons did for him just as he had commanded them.

13 f or his sons carried him into the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a buryingplace from Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre.

For his sons carried him to the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, before Mamre, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite as property for a burial place.

14 A nd Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.

And after he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers and all who went up with him to bury his father. Joseph Reassures His Brothers

15 And when Joseph’s brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him.

When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “Perhaps Joseph will hate us, and may actually repay us for all the evil which we did to him.”

16 A nd they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying,

So they sent messengers to Joseph, saying, “Before your father died he commanded, saying,

17 S o shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren and their sin, for they did unto thee evil; and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the slaves of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spoke unto him.

‘Thus you shall say to Joseph: “I beg you, please forgive the trespass of your brothers and their sin; for they did evil to you.”’ Now, please, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

18 A nd his brethren also went and fell down before his face, and they said, Behold, we are thy slaves.

Then his brothers also went and fell down before his face, and they said, “Behold, we are your servants.”

19 A nd Joseph said unto them, Fear not; for am I in the place of God?

Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God?

20 B ut as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God thought it out unto good, to bring to pass that which we see this day, to give life to many people.

But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.

21 N ow therefore fear ye not; I will nourish you and your little ones. Thus he comforted them and spoke to their heart.

Now therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones.” And he comforted them and spoke kindly to them. Death of Joseph

22 And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father’s house: and Joseph lived one hundred and ten years.

So Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he and his father’s household. And Joseph lived one hundred and ten years.

23 A nd Joseph saw Ephraim’s sons unto the third generation; the sons also of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were brought up upon Joseph’s knees.

Joseph saw Ephraim’s children to the third generation. The children of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were also brought up on Joseph’s knees.

24 A nd Joseph said unto his brethren, I die; but God will surely visit you and bring you out of this land unto the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

And Joseph said to his brethren, “I am dying; but God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land to the land of which He swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.”

25 A nd Joseph took an oath of the sons of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from here.

Then Joseph took an oath from the children of Israel, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here.”

26 S o Joseph died, being one hundred and ten years old; and they embalmed him, and he was put in an ark in Egypt.

So Joseph died, being one hundred and ten years old; and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
