1 A fter the death of Aaron’s two sons, when they drew near before the Lord and died,

Now the Lord spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they offered profane fire before the Lord, and died;

2 T he Lord said to Moses, Tell Aaron your brother he must not come at all times into the Holy of Holies within the veil before the mercy seat upon the ark, lest he die; for I will appear in the cloud on the mercy seat.

and the Lord said to Moses: “Tell Aaron your brother not to come at just any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark, lest he die; for I will appear in the cloud above the mercy seat.

3 B ut Aaron shall come into the holy enclosure in this way: with a young bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.

“Thus Aaron shall come into the Holy Place: with the blood of a young bull as a sin offering, and of a ram as a burnt offering.

4 H e shall put on the holy linen undergarment, and he shall have the linen breeches upon his body, and be girded with the linen girdle or sash, and with the linen turban or miter shall he be attired; these are the holy garments; he shall bathe his body in water and then put them on.

He shall put the holy linen tunic and the linen trousers on his body; he shall be girded with a linen sash, and with the linen turban he shall be attired. These are holy garments. Therefore he shall wash his body in water, and put them on.

5 H e shall take of the congregation of the Israelites two male goats for a sin offering and one ram for a burnt offering.

And he shall take from the congregation of the children of Israel two kids of the goats as a sin offering, and one ram as a burnt offering.

6 A nd Aaron shall present the bull as the sin offering for himself and make atonement for himself and for his house.

“Aaron shall offer the bull as a sin offering, which is for himself, and make atonement for himself and for his house.

7 H e shall take the two goats and present them before the Lord at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

He shall take the two goats and present them before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of meeting.

8 A aron shall cast lots on the two goats—one lot for the Lord, the other lot for Azazel or removal.

Then Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats: one lot for the Lord and the other lot for the scapegoat.

9 A nd Aaron shall bring the goat on which the Lord’s lot fell and offer him as a sin offering.

And Aaron shall bring the goat on which the Lord ’s lot fell, and offer it as a sin offering.

10 B ut the goat on which the lot fell for Azazel or removal shall be presented alive before the Lord to make atonement over him, that he may be let go into the wilderness for Azazel (for dismissal).

But the goat on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the Lord, to make atonement upon it, and to let it go as the scapegoat into the wilderness.

11 A aron shall present the bull as the sin offering for his own sins and shall make atonement for himself and for his house, and shall kill the bull as the sin offering for himself.

“And Aaron shall bring the bull of the sin offering, which is for himself, and make atonement for himself and for his house, and shall kill the bull as the sin offering which is for himself.

12 H e shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from off the altar before the Lord, and his two hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the veil,

Then he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from the altar before the Lord, with his hands full of sweet incense beaten fine, and bring it inside the veil.

13 A nd put the incense on the fire before the Lord, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is upon the Testimony, lest he die.

And he shall put the incense on the fire before the Lord, that the cloud of incense may cover the mercy seat that is on the Testimony, lest he die.

14 H e shall take of the bull’s blood and sprinkle it with his finger on the front of the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat he shall sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times.

He shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the mercy seat on the east side; and before the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.

15 T hen shall he kill the goat of the sin offering that is for the people and bring its blood within the veil and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercy seat and before the mercy seat.

“Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering, which is for the people, bring its blood inside the veil, do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercy seat and before the mercy seat.

16 T hus he shall make atonement for the Holy Place because of the uncleanness of the Israelites and because of their transgressions, even all their sins; and so shall he do for the Tent of Meeting, that remains among them in the midst of their uncleanness.

So he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions, for all their sins; and so he shall do for the tabernacle of meeting which remains among them in the midst of their uncleanness.

17 T here shall be no man in the Tent of Meeting when the high priest goes in to make atonement in the Holy of Holies until he comes out and has made atonement for his own sins and those of his house and of all the congregation of Israel.

There shall be no man in the tabernacle of meeting when he goes in to make atonement in the Holy Place, until he comes out, that he may make atonement for himself, for his household, and for all the assembly of Israel.

18 A nd he shall go out to the altar which is before the Lord and make atonement for it, and shall take some of the blood of the bull and of the goat and put it on the horns of the altar round about.

19 A nd he shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his fingers seven times and cleanse it and hallow it from the uncleanness of the Israelites.

Then he shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times, cleanse it, and consecrate it from the uncleanness of the children of Israel.

20 A nd when he has finished atoning for the Holy of Holies and the Tent of Meeting and the altar, he shall present the live goat;

“And when he has made an end of atoning for the Holy Place, the tabernacle of meeting, and the altar, he shall bring the live goat.

21 A nd Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat and confess over him all the iniquities of the Israelites and all their transgressions, all their sins; and he shall put them upon the head of the goat, and send him away into the wilderness by the hand of a man who is timely (ready, fit).

Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, confess over it all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions, concerning all their sins, putting them on the head of the goat, and shall send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a suitable man.

22 T he goat shall bear upon himself all their iniquities, carrying them to a land cut off (a land of forgetfulness and separation, not inhabited)! And the man leading it shall let the goat go in the wilderness.

The goat shall bear on itself all their iniquities to an uninhabited land; and he shall release the goat in the wilderness.

23 A aron shall come into the Tent of Meeting and put off the linen garments which he put on when he went into the Holy of Holies, and leave them there;

“Then Aaron shall come into the tabernacle of meeting, shall take off the linen garments which he put on when he went into the Holy Place, and shall leave them there.

24 A nd he shall bathe his body with water in a sacred place and put on his garments, and come forth and offer his burnt offering and that of the people, and make atonement for himself and for them.

And he shall wash his body with water in a holy place, put on his garments, come out and offer his burnt offering and the burnt offering of the people, and make atonement for himself and for the people.

And he who released the goat as the scapegoat shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and afterward he may come into the camp.

27 T he bull and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the Holy of Holies, shall be carried forth without the camp; their skins, their flesh, and their dung shall be burned with fire.

The bull for the sin offering and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the Holy Place, shall be carried outside the camp. And they shall burn in the fire their skins, their flesh, and their offal.

28 A nd he who burns them shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and afterward he may come into the camp.
