1 N ow it came to pass, when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;

Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and had destroyed it. Joshua had done the same thing to Ai and its king that he had done to Jericho and its king. Adoni-zedek heard that the people of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them.

2 t hat they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.

He was very much afraid. Because Gibeon was a large city, like one of the cities of a king. It was larger than Ai. All its men were strong.

3 W herefore Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying,

So Adoni-zedek of Jerusalem sent word to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon. He said to them,

4 C ome up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon: for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.

“Come and help me. Let us go fight against Gibeon. For it has made peace with Joshua and the people of Israel.”

5 T herefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.

So the five kings of the Amorites, the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon, gathered together with all their armies. And they went and set up their tents by Gibeon, to fight against it.

6 A nd the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.

Then the men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua at the tents at Gilgal, saying, “Do not leave your servants alone. Hurry and help us. For all the kings of the Amorites who live in the hill country have gathered against us.”

7 S o Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.

So Joshua went up from Gilgal. He took with him all the men of war and all the strong soldiers.

8 A nd the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.

The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them. For I have given them into your hands. Not one of them will stand in front of you.”

9 J oshua therefore came unto them suddenly, and went up from Gilgal all night.

So Joshua came upon them by surprise by traveling all night from Gilgal.

10 A nd the Lord discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Beth-horon, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.

The Lord brought trouble upon the Amorites in front of Israel. He killed many of them at Gibeon, and went after them on the way up to Beth-horon. He killed them as far as Azekah and Makkedah.

11 A nd it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Beth-horon, that the Lord cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

They ran from Israel. And while they ran from Beth-horon, the Lord made large hail-stones fall from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died. More died from the hail-stones than the sons of Israel killed with the sword.

12 T hen spake Joshua to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.

Then Joshua spoke to the Lord on the day when the Lord made the Amorites lose the war against the sons of Israel. He said, in the eyes of Israel, “O sun, stand still at Gibeon. O moon, stand still in the valley of Aijalon.”

13 A nd the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

So the sun stood still and the moon stopped, until the nation punished those who fought against them. Is it not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in the center of the sky. It did not hurry to go down for about a whole day.

14 A nd there was no day like that before it or after it, that the Lord hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the Lord fought for Israel.

There has been no day like it before or since, when the Lord listened to the voice of a man. For the Lord fought for Israel.

15 A nd Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

Then Joshua and all Israel returned to the tents at Gilgal.

16 B ut these five kings fled, and hid themselves in a cave at Makkedah.

Now these five kings had run away and hidden themselves in the cave at Makkedah.

17 A nd it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found hid in a cave at Makkedah.

Joshua was told, “The five kings have been found hiding in the cave at Makkedah.”

18 A nd Joshua said, Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set men by it for to keep them:

And Joshua said, “Roll large stones against the opening of the cave. Then put men there to watch over them.

19 a nd stay ye not, but pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for the Lord your God hath delivered them into your hand.

But do not stay there yourselves. Go after those who hate you. Follow after them and fight. Do not let them go into their cities. For the Lord your God has given them into your hand.”

20 A nd it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed, that the rest which remained of them entered into fenced cities.

Joshua and the sons of Israel finished killing many of them, until they were destroyed. Those who were left alive went into their strong cities.

21 A nd all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.

Then all the people returned to Joshua at the tents at Makkedah in peace. No one said a word against any of the people of Israel.

22 T hen said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings unto me out of the cave.

Then Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me.”

23 A nd they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.

The five kings were brought to him from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon.

24 A nd it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.

When they brought those kings out to Joshua, he called for all the men of Israel. He said to the leaders of the men of war who had gone with him, “Come near. Put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So they came and put their feet on their necks.

25 A nd Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the Lord do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.

Then Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid or troubled. Be strong and have strength of heart. For the Lord will do this to all who hate you and fight against you.”

26 A nd afterward Joshua smote them, and slew them, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.

After this Joshua killed the kings. He hanged them on five trees, and they hung on the trees until evening.

27 A nd it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been hid, and laid great stones in the cave’s mouth, which remain until this very day.

When the sun went down, Joshua had them taken down from the trees and thrown into the cave where they had hidden. Large stones were put over the opening of the cave. And they are there to this day.

28 A nd that day Joshua took Makkedah, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Jericho.

Joshua took Makkedah on that day. He destroyed it and its king with the sword. He destroyed all of it and every person in it. No one was left alive. He did the same to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.

29 T hen Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah:

Then Joshua and all Israel went from Makkedah to fight against Libnah.

30 a nd the Lord delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of Jericho.

The Lord gave it and its king into the hands of Israel also. Joshua destroyed it and every person in it with the sword. He left no one alive. So he did the same to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.

31 A nd Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it:

Joshua and all Israel went from Libnah to Lachish. They stayed beside it and fought against it.

32 a nd the Lord delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.

And the Lord gave Lachish into the hands of Israel. Joshua took it on the second day. He destroyed it and every person in it with the sword, just as he had done to Libnah.

33 T hen Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.

Horam king of Gezer came to help Lachish. But Joshua won the battle against him and his people. He left no one alive.

34 A nd from Lachish Joshua passed unto Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they encamped against it, and fought against it:

Joshua and all Israel went from Lachish to Eglon. They stayed beside it and fought against it.

35 a nd they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.

And they took it on that day and destroyed it with the sword. He destroyed every person who was in it that day, just as he had done to Lachish.

36 A nd Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron; and they fought against it:

Joshua and all Israel went from Eglon to Hebron. And they fought against it.

37 a nd they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein.

They took it and destroyed it. They destroyed its king, all its cities and all who were in it with the sword. He left no one alive, just as he had done to Eglon. He destroyed all of it and every person in it.

38 A nd Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it:

Then Joshua and all Israel returned to Debir. And they fought against it.

39 a nd he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king.

He took it, its king and all its cities. He destroyed them with the sword. Every person in it was destroyed. No one was left alive. He did the same to Debir and its king as he had done to Hebron and Libnah and their kings.

40 S o Joshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the Lord God of Israel commanded.

So Joshua won the war against the whole land, the hill country, the Negev, the valleys, the hill-sides, and all their kings. He left no one alive. He destroyed all who breathed, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had told him.

41 A nd Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon.

Joshua killed them from Kadesh-barnea as far as Gaza. He killed them in all the country of Goshen as far as Gibeon.

42 A nd all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel.

Joshua took all these kings and their lands at the same time. Because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.

43 A nd Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

Then Joshua and all Israel returned to the tents at Gilgal.
