1 T hen the high priest said, “Are these things so?”
And the high priest said, Are these things then so?
2 A nd he said, “Brethren and fathers, listen: The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran,

3 a nd said to him, ‘Get out of your country and from your relatives, and come to a land that I will show you.’
and said to him, Go out of thy land and out of thy kindred, and come into the land which I will shew thee.
4 T hen he came out of the land of the Chaldeans and dwelt in Haran. And from there, when his father was dead, He moved him to this land in which you now dwell.
Then going out of the land of the Chaldeans he dwelt in Charran, and thence, after his father died, he removed him into this land in which ye now dwell.
5 A nd God gave him no inheritance in it, not even enough to set his foot on. But even when Abraham had no child, He promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his descendants after him.
And he did not give him an inheritance in it, not even what his foot could stand on; and promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when he had no child.
6 B ut God spoke in this way: that his descendants would dwell in a foreign land, and that they would bring them into bondage and oppress them four hundred years.

7 ‘ And the nation to whom they will be in bondage I will judge,’ said God, ‘and after that they shall come out and serve Me in this place.’

8 T hen He gave him the covenant of circumcision; and so Abraham begot Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot the twelve patriarchs. The Patriarchs in Egypt

9 “ And the patriarchs, becoming envious, sold Joseph into Egypt. But God was with him

10 a nd delivered him out of all his troubles, and gave him favor and wisdom in the presence of Pharaoh, king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.
and delivered him out of all his tribulations, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he appointed him chief over Egypt and all his house.
11 N ow a famine and great trouble came over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and our fathers found no sustenance.
But a famine came upon all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great distress, and our fathers found no food.
12 B ut when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.

13 A nd the second time Joseph was made known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family became known to the Pharaoh.

17 “ But when the time of the promise drew near which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt

18 t ill another king arose who did not know Joseph.

19 T his man dealt treacherously with our people, and oppressed our forefathers, making them expose their babies, so that they might not live.
He dealt subtilly with our race, and evil entreated the fathers, casting out their infants that they might not live.
20 A t this time Moses was born, and was well pleasing to God; and he was brought up in his father’s house for three months.
In which time Moses was born, and was exceedingly lovely, who was nourished three months in the house of his father.
21 B ut when he was set out, Pharaoh’s daughter took him away and brought him up as her own son.
And when he was cast out, the daughter of Pharaoh took him up, and brought him up for herself for a son.
22 A nd Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and deeds.

23 “ Now when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren, the children of Israel.
And when a period of forty years was fulfilled to him, it came into his heart to look upon his brethren, the sons of Israel;
24 A nd seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended and avenged him who was oppressed, and struck down the Egyptian.
and seeing a certain one wronged, he defended, and avenged him that was being oppressed, smiting the Egyptian.
25 F or he supposed that his brethren would have understood that God would deliver them by his hand, but they did not understand.
For he thought that his brethren would understand that God by his hand was giving them deliverance. But they understood not.
26 A nd the next day he appeared to two of them as they were fighting, and tried to reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brethren; why do you wrong one another?’
And on the morrow he shewed himself to them as they were contending, and compelled them to peace, saying, Ye are brethren, why do ye wrong one another?
27 B ut he who did his neighbor wrong pushed him away, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?
But he that was wronging his neighbour thrust him away, saying, Who established thee ruler and judge over us?
28 D o you want to kill me as you did the Egyptian yesterday?’
Dost thou wish to kill me as thou killedst the Egyptian yesterday?
29 T hen, at this saying, Moses fled and became a dweller in the land of Midian, where he had two sons.

30 “ And when forty years had passed, an Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire in a bush, in the wilderness of Mount Sinai.

31 W hen Moses saw it, he marveled at the sight; and as he drew near to observe, the voice of the Lord came to him,
And Moses seeing it wondered at the vision; and as he went up to consider it, there was a voice of Lord,
32 s aying, ‘I am the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ And Moses trembled and dared not look.
I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob. And Moses trembled, and durst not consider.
33 ‘ Then the L ord said to him, “Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.
And the Lord said to him, Loose the sandal of thy feet, for the place on which thou standest is holy ground.
34 I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt; I have heard their groaning and have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you to Egypt.”’
I have surely seen the ill treatment of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groan, and have come down to take them out of it; and now, come, I will send thee to Egypt.
35 “ This Moses whom they rejected, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’ is the one God sent to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the Angel who appeared to him in the bush.
This Moses, whom they refused, saying, Who made thee ruler and judge? him did God send a ruler and deliverer with the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
36 H e brought them out, after he had shown wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years. Israel Rebels Against God

37 “ This is that Moses who said to the children of Israel, ‘The L ord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brethren. Him you shall hear.’
This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, A prophet shall God raise up to you out of your brethren like me.
38 “ This is he who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the Angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers, the one who received the living oracles to give to us,

39 w hom our fathers would not obey, but rejected. And in their hearts they turned back to Egypt,
to whom our fathers would not be subject, but thrust from them, and in their hearts turned back to Egypt,
40 s aying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods to go before us; as for this Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’

41 A nd they made a calf in those days, offered sacrifices to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.

42 T hen God turned and gave them up to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the Prophets: ‘Did you offer Me slaughtered animals and sacrifices during forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

43 Y ou also took up the tabernacle of Moloch, And the star of your god Remphan, Images which you made to worship; And I will carry you away beyond Babylon.’ God’s True Tabernacle
Yea, ye took up the tent of Moloch, and the star of god Remphan, the forms which ye made to do homage to them; and I will transport you beyond Babylon.
44 “ Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as He appointed, instructing Moses to make it according to the pattern that he had seen,
Our fathers had the tent of the testimony in the wilderness, as he that spoke to Moses commanded to make it according to the model which he had seen;
45 w hich our fathers, having received it in turn, also brought with Joshua into the land possessed by the Gentiles, whom God drove out before the face of our fathers until the days of David,
which also our fathers, receiving from their predecessors, brought in with Joshua when they entered into possession of the nations, whom God drove out from face of our fathers, until the days of David;
46 w ho found favor before God and asked to find a dwelling for the God of Jacob.

48 “ However, the Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says:

49 ‘ Heaven is My throne, And earth is My footstool. What house will you build for Me? says the L ord, Or what is the place of My rest?
The heaven my throne and the earth the footstool of my feet: what house will ye build me? saith Lord, or where place of my rest?
50 H as My hand not made all these things?’ Israel Resists the Holy Spirit

51 “ You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you.
O stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers, ye also.
52 W hich of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of the Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers,
Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain those who announced beforehand concerning the coming of the Just One, of whom ye have now become deliverers up and murderers!
53 w ho have received the law by the direction of angels and have not kept it. ” Stephen the Martyr
who have received the law as ordained by ministry of angels, and have not kept.
54 W hen they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.
And hearing these things they were cut to the heart, and gnashed their teeth against him.
55 B ut he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,

56 a nd said, “Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”

57 T hen they cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord;

58 a nd they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul.

59 A nd they stoned Stephen as he was calling on God and saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”

60 T hen he knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not charge them with this sin.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
And kneeling down, he cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And having said this, he fell asleep.
