1 A nd Hannah prayed and said: “My heart rejoices in the Lord; My horn is exalted in the Lord. I smile at my enemies, Because I rejoice in Your salvation.

And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart exulteth in Jehovah, my horn is lifted up in Jehovah; my mouth is opened wide over mine enemies; for I rejoice in thy salvation.

2 No one is holy like the Lord, For there is none besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God.

There is none holy as Jehovah, for there is none beside thee, neither is there any rock like our God.

3 Talk no more so very proudly; Let no arrogance come from your mouth, For the Lord is the God of knowledge; And by Him actions are weighed.

Do not multiply your words of pride, let not vain-glory come out of your mouth; For Jehovah is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.

4 The bows of the mighty men are broken, And those who stumbled are girded with strength.

The bow of the mighty is broken, and they that stumbled are girded with strength.

5 T hose who were full have hired themselves out for bread, And the hungry have ceased to hunger. Even the barren has borne seven, And she who has many children has become feeble.

They that were full have hired themselves out for bread; and the hungry are no more: Even the barren beareth seven, and she that hath many children is waxed feeble.

6 The Lord kills and makes alive; He brings down to the grave and brings up.

Jehovah killeth, and maketh alive; he bringeth down to Sheol, and bringeth up.

7 T he Lord makes poor and makes rich; He brings low and lifts up.

Jehovah maketh poor, and maketh rich, he bringeth low, also he lifteth up:

8 H e raises the poor from the dust And lifts the beggar from the ash heap, To set them among princes And make them inherit the throne of glory. “For the pillars of the earth are the Lord ’s, And He has set the world upon them.

He raiseth up the poor out of the dust; from the dung-hill he lifteth up the needy, To set among nobles; and he maketh them inherit a throne of glory; For the pillars of the earth are Jehovah's, and he hath set the world upon them.

9 H e will guard the feet of His saints, But the wicked shall be silent in darkness. “For by strength no man shall prevail.

He keepeth the feet of his saints, but the wicked are silenced in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.

10 T he adversaries of the Lord shall be broken in pieces; From heaven He will thunder against them. The Lord will judge the ends of the earth. “He will give strength to His king, And exalt the horn of His anointed.”

They that strive with Jehovah shall be broken to pieces; in the heavens will he thunder upon them. Jehovah will judge the ends of the earth; and he will give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.

12 N ow the sons of Eli were corrupt; they did not know the Lord.

Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not Jehovah.

13 A nd the priests’ custom with the people was that when any man offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged fleshhook in his hand while the meat was boiling.

And the priests' custom with the people was, when any man sacrificed a sacrifice, the priest's servant came, when the flesh was cooked, with a flesh-hook of three prongs in his hand;

14 T hen he would thrust it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; and the priest would take for himself all that the fleshhook brought up. So they did in Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there.

and he struck it into the pan, or kettle, or cauldron, or pot; the priest took of it all that the flesh-hook brought up. So they did in Shiloh to all the Israelites that came there.

15 A lso, before they burned the fat, the priest’s servant would come and say to the man who sacrificed, “Give meat for roasting to the priest, for he will not take boiled meat from you, but raw.”

Even before they burned the fat, the priest's servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to roast for the priest, and he will not accept sodden flesh of thee, but raw.

16 A nd if the man said to him, “They should really burn the fat first; then you may take as much as your heart desires,” he would then answer him, “ No, but you must give it now; and if not, I will take it by force.”

If the man said to him, They will immediately burn the fat entire, then take as thy soul desires; he would say, No, but thou shalt give now; and if not, I will take by force.

17 T herefore the sin of the young men was very great before the Lord, for men abhorred the offering of the Lord. Samuel’s Childhood Ministry

And the sin of the young men was very great before Jehovah, for men despised the offering of Jehovah.

18 B ut Samuel ministered before the Lord, even as a child, wearing a linen ephod.

And Samuel ministered before Jehovah, a boy girded with a linen ephod.

19 M oreover his mother used to make him a little robe, and bring it to him year by year when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.

And his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to sacrifice the yearly sacrifice.

20 A nd Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, “The Lord give you descendants from this woman for the loan that was given to the Lord.” Then they would go to their own home.

And Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, Jehovah give thee seed of this woman for the loan which is lent to Jehovah. And they went to their own home.

21 A nd the Lord visited Hannah, so that she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile the child Samuel grew before the Lord. Prophecy Against Eli’s Household

So Jehovah visited Hannah, and she conceived, and bore three sons and two daughters. And the boy Samuel grew before Jehovah.

22 N ow Eli was very old; and he heard everything his sons did to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who assembled at the door of the tabernacle of meeting.

And Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons were doing to all Israel, and that they lay with the women that served at the entrance of the tent of meeting.

23 S o he said to them, “Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all the people.

And he said to them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil deeds from all this people.

24 N o, my sons! For it is not a good report that I hear. You make the Lord ’s people transgress.

No, my sons, for it is no good report that I hear: ye make Jehovah's people transgress.

25 I f one man sins against another, God will judge him. But if a man sins against the Lord, who will intercede for him?” Nevertheless they did not heed the voice of their father, because the Lord desired to kill them.

If one man sin against another, God will judge him; but if a man sin against Jehovah, who shall intreat for him? But they hearkened not to the voice of their father, for Jehovah was minded to slay them.

26 A nd the child Samuel grew in stature, and in favor both with the Lord and men.

And the boy Samuel grew on, and was in favour both with Jehovah and also with men.

27 T hen a man of God came to Eli and said to him, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Did I not clearly reveal Myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house?

And there came a man of God to Eli and said to him, Thus saith Jehovah: Did I plainly reveal myself to the house of thy father when they were in Egypt, in Pharaoh's house,

28 D id I not choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be My priest, to offer upon My altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod before Me? And did I not give to the house of your father all the offerings of the children of Israel made by fire?

and choose him out of all the tribes of Israel, to be my priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear the ephod before me? and I gave unto the house of thy father all the offerings by fire of the children of Israel.

29 W hy do you kick at My sacrifice and My offering which I have commanded in My dwelling place, and honor your sons more than Me, to make yourselves fat with the best of all the offerings of Israel My people?’

Wherefore do ye trample upon my sacrifice and upon mine oblation which I have commanded habitation? And thou honourest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the primest of all the oblations of Israel my people.

30 T herefore the Lord God of Israel says: ‘I said indeed that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me forever.’ But now the Lord says: ‘Far be it from Me; for those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed.

Wherefore Jehovah the God of Israel saith, I said indeed, Thy house and the house of thy father should walk before me for ever. But now Jehovah saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.

31 B ehold, the days are coming that I will cut off your arm and the arm of your father’s house, so that there will not be an old man in your house.

Behold, days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father's house, that there shall not be an old man in thy house.

32 A nd you will see an enemy in My dwelling place, despite all the good which God does for Israel. And there shall not be an old man in your house forever.

And thou shalt see an oppressor habitation, amidst all the good that shall be done to Israel; and there shall not be an old man in thy house for ever.

33 B ut any of your men whom I do not cut off from My altar shall consume your eyes and grieve your heart. And all the descendants of your house shall die in the flower of their age.

And the man of thine I shall not cut off from mine altar, shall be to cause thine eyes to fail and to grieve thy soul; and all the increase of thy house shall die in their vigour.

34 N ow this shall be a sign to you that will come upon your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they shall die, both of them.

And this shall be the sign to thee, which shall come upon thy two sons, upon Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they shall die, both of them.

35 T hen I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest who shall do according to what is in My heart and in My mind. I will build him a sure house, and he shall walk before My anointed forever.

And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, shall do according to what is in my heart and in my mind; and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before mine anointed continually.

36 A nd it shall come to pass that everyone who is left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and say, “Please, put me in one of the priestly positions, that I may eat a piece of bread.”’”

And it shall come to pass every one that is left of thy house shall come to crouch to him for a small piece of silver and for a cake of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priestly offices, that I may eat a morsel of bread.
