1 T hen I saw a new sky (heaven) and a new earth, for the former sky and the former earth had passed away (vanished), and there no longer existed any sea.

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea.

2 A nd I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, all arrayed like a bride beautified and adorned for her husband;

And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.

3 T hen I heard a mighty voice from the throne and I perceived its distinct words, saying, See! The abode of God is with men, and He will live (encamp, tent) among them; and they shall be His people, and God shall personally be with them and be their God.

And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them,

4 G od will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and death shall be no more, neither shall there be anguish (sorrow and mourning) nor grief nor pain any more, for the old conditions and the former order of things have passed away.

and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.”

5 A nd He Who is seated on the throne said, See! I make all things new. Also He said, Record this, for these sayings are faithful (accurate, incorruptible, and trustworthy) and true (genuine).

And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.”

6 A nd He said to me, It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without price from the fountain (springs) of the water of Life.

Then He said to me, “ It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost.

7 H e who is victorious shall inherit all these things, and I will be God to him and he shall be My son.

He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.

8 B ut as for the cowards and the ignoble and the contemptible and the cravenly lacking in courage and the cowardly submissive, and as for the unbelieving and faithless, and as for the depraved and defiled with abominations, and as for murderers and the lewd and adulterous and the practicers of magic arts and the idolaters (those who give supreme devotion to anyone or anything other than God) and all liars (those who knowingly convey untruth by word or deed)— their part in the lake that blazes with fire and brimstone. This is the second death.

But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

9 T hen one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls filled with the seven final plagues (afflictions, calamities) came and spoke to me. He said, Come with me! I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.

Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and spoke with me, saying, “ Come here, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.” The New Jerusalem

10 T hen in the Spirit He conveyed me away to a vast and lofty mountain and exhibited to me the holy (hallowed, consecrated) city of Jerusalem descending out of heaven from God,

And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,

11 C lothed in God’s glory. The luster of it resembled a rare and most precious jewel, like jasper, shining clear as crystal.

having the glory of God. Her brilliance was like a very costly stone, as a stone of crystal-clear jasper.

12 I t had a massive and high wall with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were written:

It had a great and high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels; and names were written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel.

13 O n the east side three gates, on the north side three gates, on the south side three gates, and on the west side three gates.

There were three gates on the east and three gates on the north and three gates on the south and three gates on the west.

14 A nd the wall of the city had twelve foundation, and on them the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

And the wall of the city had twelve foundation stones, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

15 A nd he who spoke to me had a golden measuring reed (rod) to measure the city and its gates and its wall.

The one who spoke with me had a gold measuring rod to measure the city, and its gates and its wall.

16 T he city lies in a square, its length being the same as its width. And he measured the city with his reed—12, 000 stadia (about 1, 500 miles); its length and width and height are the same.

The city is laid out as a square, and its length is as great as the width; and he measured the city with the rod, fifteen hundred miles; its length and width and height are equal.

17 H e measured its wall also—144 cubits (about 72 yards) by a man’s measure '> of a cubit from his elbow to his third fingertip], which is of the angel.

And he measured its wall, seventy-two yards, according to human measurements, which are also angelic measurements.

18 T he wall was built of jasper, while the city pure gold, clear and transparent like glass.

The material of the wall was jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass.

19 T he foundation of the wall of the city were ornamented with all of the precious stones. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony (or white agate), the fourth emerald,

The foundation stones of the city wall were adorned with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation stone was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, chalcedony; the fourth, emerald;

20 T he fifth onyx, the sixth sardius, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst.

the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, topaz; the tenth, chrysoprase; the eleventh, jacinth; the twelfth, amethyst.

21 A nd the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each separate gate being built of one solid pearl. And the main street (the broadway) of the city was of gold as pure and translucent as glass.

And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the gates was a single pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

22 I saw no temple in the city, for the Lord God Omnipotent and the Lamb are its temple.

I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.

23 A nd the city has no need of the sun nor of the moon to give light to it, for the splendor and radiance (glory) of God illuminate it, and the Lamb is its lamp.

And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb.

24 T he nations shall walk by its light and the rulers and leaders of the earth shall bring into it their glory.

The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it.

25 A nd its gates shall never be closed by day, and there shall be no night there.

In the daytime (for there will be no night there) its gates will never be closed;

26 T hey shall bring the glory (the splendor and majesty) and the honor of the nations into it.

and they will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it;

27 B ut nothing that defiles or profanes or is unwashed shall ever enter it, nor anyone who commits abominations (unclean, detestable, morally repugnant things) or practices falsehood, but only those whose names are recorded in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

and nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
