1 C oncerning and against the Ammonites: Thus says the Lord: Has Israel no sons ? Has no heir? Why then has Milcom dispossessed and inherited Gad, and his people dwell in Gad’s cities?
Concerning the sons of Ammon. Thus says the Lord: “Does Israel have no sons? Or has he no heirs? Why then has Malcam taken possession of Gad And his people settled in its cities?
2 T herefore behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will cause an alarm of war to be heard against Rabbah of the Ammonites; and it will become a desolate heap, and its daughter will be burned with fire. Then will Israel dispossess those who dispossessed him, says the Lord.
“Therefore behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord, “That I will cause a trumpet blast of war to be heard Against Rabbah of the sons of Ammon; And it will become a desolate heap, And her towns will be set on fire. Then Israel will take possession of his possessors,” Says the Lord.
3 W ail, O Heshbon, for Ai is laid waste! Cry out, you daughter of Rabbah! Gird yourselves with sackcloth, lament, and run to and fro inside the enclosures; for Milcom shall go into exile, together with his priests and his princes.
“Wail, O Heshbon, for Ai has been destroyed! Cry out, O daughters of Rabbah, Gird yourselves with sackcloth and lament, And rush back and forth inside the walls; For Malcam will go into exile Together with his priests and his princes.
4 W hy do you boast of your valleys? Your valley flows away, O rebellious and faithless daughter, who trusted in her treasures, who said, Who can come against me?
“How boastful you are about the valleys! Your valley is flowing away, O backsliding daughter Who trusts in her treasures, saying, ‘ Who will come against me?’
5 B ehold, I will bring terror upon you, says the Lord, the Lord of hosts, from all who are round about you; and you will be driven out, each man fleeing straight before him, and there will be no one to gather together the fugitives.
“Behold, I am going to bring terror upon you,” Declares the Lord God of hosts, “From all directions around you; And each of you will be driven out headlong, With no one to gather the fugitives together.
6 A nd afterward I will reverse the captivity of the children of Ammon and restore their fortunes, says the Lord.
“But afterward I will restore The fortunes of the sons of Ammon,” Declares the Lord. Prophecy against Edom
7 C oncerning and against Edom: Thus says the Lord of hosts: Is there no longer wisdom in Teman ? Has counsel vanished from the intelligent and prudent? Is their wisdom all poured out and used up?
Concerning Edom. Thus says the Lord of hosts, “Is there no longer any wisdom in Teman? Has good counsel been lost to the prudent? Has their wisdom decayed?
8 F lee, turn back, dwell deep, O inhabitants of Dedan! For I will bring the calamity and destruction of Esau upon him when I inspect and punish him.
“Flee away, turn back, dwell in the depths, O inhabitants of Dedan, For I will bring the disaster of Esau upon him At the time I punish him.
9 I f grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave some ungleaned grapes? If thieves came by night, would they not destroy only what is enough ?
“ If grape gatherers came to you, Would they not leave gleanings? If thieves came by night, They would destroy only until they had enough.
10 B ut I have stripped Esau (Edom) bare; I have uncovered his hiding places, and he cannot hide himself. His offspring will be destroyed, with his brethren and his neighbors; and he will be no more.
“But I have stripped Esau bare, I have uncovered his hiding places So that he will not be able to conceal himself; His offspring has been destroyed along with his relatives And his neighbors, and he is no more.
11 L eave your fatherless children; I will preserve them alive. And let your widows trust and confide in Me.
“Leave your orphans behind, I will keep them alive; And let your widows trust in Me.”
12 F or thus says the Lord: Behold, they whose rule was not to drink the cup shall assuredly drink—and are you to remain unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you shall surely drink.
For thus says the Lord, “Behold, those who were not sentenced to drink the cup will certainly drink it, and are you the one who will be completely acquitted? You will not be acquitted, but you will certainly drink it.
13 F or I have sworn by Myself, says the Lord, that Bozrah shall become a horror, a reproach, a waste, and a curse; and all its cities shall be perpetual wastes.
For I have sworn by Myself,” declares the Lord, “that Bozrah will become an object of horror, a reproach, a ruin and a curse; and all its cities will become perpetual ruins.”
14 I have heard a report from the Lord, and a messenger is sent to the nations, saying, Gather together and come against her! And rise up for the battle.
I have heard a message from the Lord, And an envoy is sent among the nations, saying, “ Gather yourselves together and come against her, And rise up for battle!”
15 F or, behold, I will make you small among the nations and despised among men.
“For behold, I have made you small among the nations, Despised among men.
16 Y our horror (your idol) has deceived you, and the pride of your heart, O you who dwell in the clefts of the rock '> Petra], who hold and occupy the height of the hill. Though you make your nest as high as the eagle’s, I will bring you down from there, says the Lord.
“As for the terror of you, The arrogance of your heart has deceived you, O you who live in the clefts of the rock, Who occupy the height of the hill. Though you make your nest as high as an eagle’s, I will bring you down from there,” declares the Lord.
17 A nd Edom shall be an astonishment and a horror; everyone who goes by it shall be astonished and shall hiss with horror at all its plagues and disasters.
“Edom will become an object of horror; everyone who passes by it will be horrified and will hiss at all its wounds.
18 A s in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring cities, says the Lord, no man shall dwell there; neither shall a son of man live in it temporarily.
Like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah with its neighbors,” says the Lord, “ no one will live there, nor will a son of man reside in it.
19 S ee, there comes up one like a lion from the jungles (the pride) of the Jordan against the strong habitation and into the permanent pastures; for in a twinkling I will drive him from there. And I will appoint over him the one whom I choose. For who is like Me? And who will appoint for Me the time and prosecute Me for this proceeding? And what shepherd can stand before Me and defy Me?
Behold, one will come up like a lion from the thickets of the Jordan against a perennially watered pasture; for in an instant I will make him run away from it, and whoever is chosen I shall appoint over it. For who is like Me, and who will summon Me into court ? And who then is the shepherd who can stand against Me?”
20 T herefore hear the plan of the Lord which He has made against Edom, and His purposes which He has formed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely they shall be dragged away, even the little ones of the flock; surely He shall make their habitation desolate because of them and their fold shocked at their fate.
Therefore hear the plan of the Lord which He has planned against Edom, and His purposes which He has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: surely they will drag them off, even the little ones of the flock; surely He will make their pasture desolate because of them.
21 A t the sound of their fall the earth shall tremble; at their crying the sound shall be heard at the Red Sea.
The earth has quaked at the noise of their downfall. There is an outcry! The noise of it has been heard at the Red Sea.
22 B ehold, one will come up and fly swiftly like an eagle and spread his wings against Bozrah; and in that day the hearts of the mighty warriors of Edom will be like the heart of a woman in her pangs.
Behold, He will mount up and swoop like an eagle and spread out His wings against Bozrah; and the hearts of the mighty men of Edom in that day will be like the heart of a woman in labor. Prophecy against Damascus
23 C oncerning and against Damascus: Hamath and Arpad are confounded and put to shame, for they have heard bad news; they are fainthearted and wasting away; there is trouble and anxiety on a sea which cannot rest.
Concerning Damascus. “ Hamath and Arpad are put to shame, For they have heard bad news; They are disheartened. There is anxiety by the sea, It cannot be calmed.
24 D amascus has become feeble; she has turned to flee, and terror and panic have seized her; anguish and sorrow have taken hold of her, like a woman in childbirth.
“Damascus has become helpless; She has turned away to flee, And panic has gripped her; Distress and pangs have taken hold of her Like a woman in childbirth.
25 H ow the renowned city is not deserted, the city of my joy!.
“How the city of praise has not been deserted, The town of My joy!
26 T herefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all her soldiers shall be destroyed in that day, says the Lord of hosts.
“Therefore, her young men will fall in her streets, And all the men of war will be silenced in that day,” declares the Lord of hosts.
27 A nd I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it will consume the palaces of Ben-hadad.
“I will set fire to the wall of Damascus, And it will devour the fortified towers of Ben-hadad.” Prophecy against Kedar and Hazor
28 C oncerning Kedar and concerning the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon shall smite: Thus says the Lord: Arise, go up against Kedar and destroy the sons of the east.
Concerning Kedar and the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon defeated. Thus says the Lord, “Arise, go up to Kedar And devastate the men of the east.
29 T heir tents and their flocks shall they take—their tent hangings and all their utensils and their camels. And men shall cry to them, Terror on every side!
“They will take away their tents and their flocks; They will carry off for themselves Their tent curtains, all their goods and their camels, And they will call out to one another, ‘ Terror on every side!’
30 F lee, wander far off, dwell deep, O you inhabitants of Hazor says the Lord, for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon has planned a course against you and has conceived a purpose against you.
“Run away, flee! Dwell in the depths, O inhabitants of Hazor,” declares the Lord; “For Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has formed a plan against you And devised a scheme against you.
31 A rise, get up into a nation which is at ease, which dwells without care, says the Lord, which has neither gates nor bars, which dwells apart and alone.
“Arise, go up against a nation which is at ease, Which lives securely,” declares the Lord. “It has no gates or bars; They dwell alone.
32 A nd their camels will be booty, and their herds of cattle a spoil; and I will scatter to all winds those who clip off the corners of their hair, and I will bring their calamity from every side, says the Lord.
“Their camels will become plunder, And their many cattle for booty, And I will scatter to all the winds those who cut the corners of their hair; And I will bring their disaster from every side,” declares the Lord.
33 A nd Hazor shall become a dwelling place of jackals, a desolation forever; no man shall dwell there; neither shall a son of man live in it temporarily.
“Hazor will become a haunt of jackals, A desolation forever; No one will live there, Nor will a son of man reside in it.” Prophecy against Elam
34 T he word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning and against Elam, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying,
That which came as the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam, at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying:
35 T hus says the Lord of hosts: Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the chief of their strength.
“Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘Behold, I am going to break the bow of Elam, The finest of their might.
36 A nd upon Elam will I bring the four winds from the four corners of heaven; and I will scatter them toward all those winds, and there will be no nation to which the outcasts of Elam will not come.
‘I will bring upon Elam the four winds From the four ends of heaven, And will scatter them to all these winds; And there will be no nation To which the outcasts of Elam will not go.
37 A nd I will cause Elam to be dismayed and terrified before their enemies and before those who seek and demand their lives; and I will bring evil and disaster upon them, even My fierce anger, says the Lord. And I will send the sword after them until I have consumed them.
‘So I will shatter Elam before their enemies And before those who seek their lives; And I will bring calamity upon them, Even My fierce anger,’ declares the Lord, ‘And I will send out the sword after them Until I have consumed them.
38 A nd I will set My throne in Elam; and I will destroy from their king and princes, says the Lord.
‘Then I will set My throne in Elam And destroy out of it king and princes,’ Declares the Lord.
39 B ut it shall be in the latter days (the end of days) that I will reverse the captivity and restore the fortunes of Elam, says the Lord.
‘But it will come about in the last days That I will restore the fortunes of Elam,’” Declares the Lord.
