1 O God, why have You rejected us forever? Why does Your anger smoke against the sheep of Your pasture?

O God, why hast thou cast us off for ever? Why doth thine anger smoke against the sheep of thy pasture?

2 R emember Your congregation, which You have purchased of old, Which You have redeemed to be the tribe of Your inheritance; And this Mount Zion, where You have dwelt.

Remember thy congregation, which thou hast gotten of old, Which thou hast redeemed to be the tribe of thine inheritance; And mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.

3 T urn Your footsteps toward the perpetual ruins; The enemy has damaged everything within the sanctuary.

Lift up thy feet unto the perpetual ruins, All the evil that the enemy hath done in the sanctuary.

4 Y our adversaries have roared in the midst of Your meeting place; They have set up their own standards for signs.

Thine adversaries have roared in the midst of thine assembly; They have set up their ensigns for signs.

5 I t seems as if one had lifted up His axe in a forest of trees.

They seemed as men that lifted up Axes upon a thicket of trees.

6 A nd now all its carved work They smash with hatchet and hammers.

And now all the carved work thereof They break down with hatchet and hammers.

7 T hey have burned Your sanctuary to the ground; They have defiled the dwelling place of Your name.

They have set thy sanctuary on fire; They have profaned the dwelling-place of thy name by casting it to the ground.

8 T hey said in their heart, “Let us completely subdue them.” They have burned all the meeting places of God in the land.

They said in their heart, Let us make havoc of them altogether: They have burned up all the synagogues of God in the land.

9 W e do not see our signs; There is no longer any prophet, Nor is there any among us who knows how long.

We see not our signs: There is no more any prophet; Neither is there among us any that knoweth how long.

10 H ow long, O God, will the adversary revile, And the enemy spurn Your name forever?

How long, O God, shall the adversary reproach? Shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever?

11 W hy do You withdraw Your hand, even Your right hand? From within Your bosom, destroy them!

Why drawest thou back thy hand, even thy right hand? Pluck it out of thy bosom and consume them.

12 Y et God is my king from of old, Who works deeds of deliverance in the midst of the earth.

Yet God is my King of old, Working salvation in the midst of the earth.

13 Y ou divided the sea by Your strength; You broke the heads of the sea monsters in the waters.

Thou didst divide the sea by thy strength: Thou brakest the heads of the sea-monsters in the waters.

14 Y ou crushed the heads of Leviathan; You gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness.

Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces; Thou gavest him to be food to the people inhabiting the wilderness.

15 Y ou broke open springs and torrents; You dried up ever-flowing streams.

Thou didst cleave fountain and flood: Thou driedst up mighty rivers.

16 Y ours is the day, Yours also is the night; You have prepared the light and the sun.

The day is thine, the night also is thine: Thou hast prepared the light and the sun.

17 Y ou have established all the boundaries of the earth; You have made summer and winter.

Thou hast set all the borders of the earth: Thou hast made summer and winter.

18 R emember this, O Lord, that the enemy has reviled, And a foolish people has spurned Your name.

Remember this, that the enemy hath reproached, O Jehovah, And that a foolish people hath blasphemed thy name.

19 D o not deliver the soul of Your turtledove to the wild beast; Do not forget the life of Your afflicted forever.

Oh deliver not the soul of thy turtle-dove unto the wild beast: Forget not the life of thy poor for ever.

20 C onsider the covenant; For the dark places of the land are full of the habitations of violence.

Have respect unto the covenant; For the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of violence.

21 L et not the oppressed return dishonored; Let the afflicted and needy praise Your name.

Oh let not the oppressed return ashamed: Let the poor and needy praise thy name.

22 A rise, O God, and plead Your own cause; Remember how the foolish man reproaches You all day long.

Arise, O God, plead thine own cause: Remember how the foolish man reproacheth thee all the day.

23 D o not forget the voice of Your adversaries, The uproar of those who rise against You which ascends continually.

Forget not the voice of thine adversaries: The tumult of those that rise up against thee ascendeth continually.
