1 P aul, apostle of Jesus Christ, according to command of God our Saviour, and of Christ Jesus our hope,
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Saviour, and Christ Jesus our hope;
2 t o Timotheus, true child in faith: grace, mercy, peace, from God our Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
unto Timothy, my true child in faith: Grace, mercy, peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 E ven as I begged thee to remain in Ephesus, going to Macedonia, that thou mightest enjoin some not to teach other doctrines,
As I exhorted thee to tarry at Ephesus, when I was going into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge certain men not to teach a different doctrine,
4 n or to turn their minds to fables and interminable genealogies, which bring questionings rather than God's dispensation, which in faith.
neither to give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questionings, rather than a dispensation of God which is in faith; so do I now.
5 B ut the end of what is enjoined is love out of a pure heart and a good conscience and unfeigned faith;
But the end of the charge is love out of a pure heart and a good conscience and faith unfeigned:
6 w hich some having missed, have turned aside to vain discourse,
from which things some having swerved have turned aside unto vain talking;
7 d esiring to be law-teachers, not understanding either what they say or concerning what they strenuously affirm.
desiring to be teachers of the law, though they understand neither what they say, nor whereof they confidently affirm.
8 N ow we know that the law good if any one uses it lawfully,
But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully,
9 k nowing this, that law has not its application to a righteous person, but to lawless and insubordinate, to impious and sinful, to unholy and profane, to smiters of fathers and smiters of mothers; to murderers,
as knowing this, that law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and unruly, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
10 f ornicators, sodomites, kidnappers, liars, perjurers; and if any other thing is opposed to sound teaching,
for fornicators, for abusers of themselves with men, for menstealers, for liars, for false swearers, and if there be any other thing contrary to the sound doctrine;
11 a ccording to the glad tidings of the glory of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.
according to the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.
12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me power, that he has counted me faithful, appointing to ministry him
I thank him that enabled me, even Christ Jesus our Lord, for that he counted me faithful, appointing me to his service;
13 w ho before was a blasphemer and persecutor, and an insolent overbearing: but mercy was shewn me because I did it ignorantly, in unbelief.
though I was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: howbeit I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief;
14 B ut the grace of our Lord surpassingly over-abounded with faith and love, which in Christ Jesus.
and the grace of our Lord abounded exceedingly with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
15 F aithful the word, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am first.
Faithful is the saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief:
16 B ut for this reason mercy was shewn me, that in me, first, Jesus Christ might display the whole long-suffering, for a delineation of those about to believe on him to life eternal.
howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me as chief might Jesus Christ show forth all his longsuffering, for an ensample of them that should thereafter believe on him unto eternal life.
17 N ow to the King of the ages, incorruptible, invisible, only God, honour and glory to the ages of ages. Amen.
Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
18 T his charge, child Timotheus, I commit to thee, according to the prophecies as to thee preceding, in order that thou mightest war by them the good warfare,
This charge I commit unto thee, my child Timothy, according to the prophecies which led the way to thee, that by them thou mayest war the good warfare;
19 m aintaining faith and a good conscience; which some, having put away, have made shipwreck as to faith;
holding faith and a good conscience; which some having thrust from them made shipwreck concerning the faith:
20 o f whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have delivered to Satan, that they may be taught by discipline not to blaspheme.
of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I delivered unto Satan, that they might be taught not to blaspheme.
