1 A nd it came to pass, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper districts, came to Ephesus, and finding certain disciples,

And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper country came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples:

2 h e said to them, Did ye receive Holy Spirit when ye had believed? And they to him, We did not even hear if Holy Spirit was.

and he said unto them, Did ye receive the Holy Spirit when ye believed? And they said unto him, Nay, we did not so much as hear whether the Holy Spirit was given.

3 A nd he said, To what then were ye baptised? And they said, To the baptism of John.

And he said, Into what then were ye baptized? And they said, Into John's baptism.

4 A nd Paul said, John indeed baptised the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on him that was coming after him, that is, on Jesus.

And Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him that should come after him, that is, on Jesus.

5 A nd when they heard that, they were baptised to the name of the Lord Jesus.

And when they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.

6 A nd Paul having laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

7 A nd all the men were about twelve.

And they were in all about twelve men.

8 A nd entering into the synagogue, he spoke boldly during three months, reasoning and persuading concerning the kingdom of God.

And he entered into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, reasoning and persuading as to the things concerning the kingdom of God.

9 B ut when some were hardened and disbelieved, speaking evil of the way before the multitude, he left them and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.

But when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.

10 A nd this took place for two years, so that all that inhabited Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.

And this continued for the space of two years; so that all they that dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.

11 A nd God wrought no ordinary miracles by the hands of Paul,

And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:

12 s o that even napkins or aprons were brought from his body upon the sick, and the diseases left them, and the wicked spirits went out.

insomuch that unto the sick were carried away from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the evil spirits went out.

13 A nd certain of the Jewish exorcists also, who went about, took in hand to call upon those who had wicked spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, I adjure you by Jesus, whom Paul preaches.

But certain also of the strolling Jews, exorcists, took upon them to name over them that had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

14 A nd there were certain, seven sons of Sceva, Jewish high priest, who were doing this.

And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest, who did this.

15 B ut the wicked spirit answering said to them, Jesus I know, and Paul I am acquainted with; but ye, who are ye?

And the evil spirit answered and said unto them, Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are ye?

16 A nd the man in whom the wicked spirit was leaped upon them, and having mastered both, prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and mastered both of them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

17 A nd this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who inhabited Ephesus, and fear fell upon all of them, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

And this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, that dwelt at Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

18 A nd many of those that believed came confessing and declaring their deeds.

Many also of them that had believed came, confessing, and declaring their deeds.

19 A nd many of those that practised curious arts brought their books and burnt them before all. And they reckoned up the prices of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

And not a few of them that practised magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all; and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

20 T hus with might the word of the Lord increased and prevailed.

So mightily grew the word of the Lord and prevailed.

21 A nd when these things were fulfilled, Paul purposed in his spirit to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia, saying, After I have been there I must see Rome also.

Now after these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.

22 A nd having sent into Macedonia two of those ministering to him, Timotheus and Erastus, he remained himself awhile in Asia.

And having sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.

23 A nd there took place at that time no small disturbance about the way.

And about that time there arose no small stir concerning the Way.

24 F or a certain by name Demetrius, a silver-beater, making silver temples of Artemis, brought no small gain to the artisans;

For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Diana, brought no little business unto the craftsmen;

25 w hom having brought together, and those who wrought in such things, he said, Men, ye know that our well-living arises from this work,

whom he gathered together, with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this business we have our wealth.

26 a nd ye see and hear that this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great crowd, not only of Ephesus, but almost of all Asia, saying that they are no gods which are made with hands.

And ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they are no gods, that are made with hands:

27 N ow not only there is danger for us that our business come into discredit, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis be counted for nothing, and that her greatness should be destroyed whom the whole of Asia and the world reveres.

and not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana be made of no account, and that she should even be deposed from her magnificence whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.

28 A nd having heard, and being filled with rage, they cried out, saying, Great Artemis of the Ephesians.

And when they heard this they were filled with wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesus.

29 A nd the city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord to the theatre, having seized and carried off with Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, fellow-travellers of Paul.

And the city was filled with the confusion: and they rushed with one accord into the theatre, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel.

30 B ut Paul intending to go in to the people, the disciples suffered him not;

And when Paul was minded to enter in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.

31 a nd some of the Asiarchs also, who were his friends, sent to him and urged him not to throw himself into the theatre.

And certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent unto him and besought him not to adventure himself into the theatre.

32 D ifferent persons therefore cried out some different thing; for the assembly was tumultuous, and the most did not know for what cause they had come together.

Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was in confusion; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.

33 B ut from among the crowd they put forward Alexander, the Jews pushing him forward. And Alexander, beckoning with his hand, would have made a defence to the people.

And they brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made a defense unto the people.

34 B ut, recognising that he was a Jew, there was one cry from all, shouting for about two hours, Great Artemis of the Ephesians.

But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

35 A nd the townclerk, having quieted the crowd, said, Ephesians, what man is there then who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of Artemis the great, and of the which fell down from heaven?

And when the townclerk had quieted the multitude, he saith, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there who knoweth not that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of the great Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?

36 T hese things therefore being undeniable, it is necessary that ye should be calm and do nothing headlong.

Seeing then that these things cannot be gainsaid, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rash.

37 F or ye have brought these men, neither temple-plunderers, nor speak injuriously of your goddess.

For ye have brought hither these men, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess.

38 I f therefore Demetrius and the artisans who with him have a matter against any one, the courts are being held, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another.

If therefore Demetrius, and the craftsmen that are with him, have a matter against any man, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another.

39 B ut if ye inquire anything concerning other matters, it will be settled in the regular assembly.

But if ye seek anything about other matters, it shall be settled in the regular assembly.

40 F or also we are in danger to be put in accusation for sedition for this of to-day, no cause existing in reference to which we shall be able to give a reason for this concourse.

For indeed we are in danger to be accused concerning this day's riot, there being no cause for it: and as touching it we shall not be able to give account of this concourse.

41 A nd having said these things, he dismissed the assembly.

And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
