1 Then he called his twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all the demons and to cure diseases.

And He called the twelve together, and gave them power and authority over all the demons and to heal diseases.

2 A nd he sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

And He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to perform healing.

3 A nd he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey: neither staves nor provision bag, neither bread, neither money, neither have two coats apiece.

And He said to them, “ Take nothing for your journey, neither a staff, nor a bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not even have two tunics apiece.

4 A nd whatever house ye enter into, abide there and depart from there.

Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that city.

5 A nd whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.

And as for those who do not receive you, as you go out from that city, shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”

6 A nd they departed and went through the towns, preaching the gospel and healing every where.

Departing, they began going throughout the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.

7 N ow Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him, and he was perplexed because it was said of some that John was risen from the dead,

Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was happening; and he was greatly perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead,

8 a nd of some, that Elijah had appeared, and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.

and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen again.

9 A nd Herod said, I have beheaded John, but who is this of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.

Herod said, “I myself had John beheaded; but who is this man about whom I hear such things?” And he kept trying to see Him.

10 And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.

When the apostles returned, they gave an account to Him of all that they had done. Taking them with Him, He withdrew by Himself to a city called Bethsaida.

11 A nd the people, when they knew it, followed him, and he received them and spoke unto them of the kingdom of God and healed those that had need of healing.

But the crowds were aware of this and followed Him; and welcoming them, He began speaking to them about the kingdom of God and curing those who had need of healing. Five Thousand Fed

12 A nd when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve and said unto him, Send the multitude away that they may go into the towns and country round about and lodge and get victuals, for we are here in a desert place.

Now the day was ending, and the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the crowd away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside and find lodging and get something to eat; for here we are in a desolate place.”

13 B ut he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more than five loaves and two fishes, unless we should go and buy food for all these people.

But He said to them, “You give them something to eat!” And they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless perhaps we go and buy food for all these people.”

14 F or they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down in companies of fifty.

(For there were about five thousand men.) And He said to His disciples, “Have them sit down to eat in groups of about fifty each.”

15 A nd they did so and made them all sit down.

They did so, and had them all sit down.

16 T hen he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them and broke and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.

Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed them, and broke them, and kept giving them to the disciples to set before the people.

17 A nd they ate and were all filled, and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.

And they all ate and were satisfied; and the broken pieces which they had left over were picked up, twelve baskets full.

18 And it came to pass as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him, and he asked them, saying, Who do the people say that I am?

And it happened that while He was praying alone, the disciples were with Him, and He questioned them, saying, “Who do the people say that I am?”

19 T hey answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elijah; and others say that one of the old prophets is risen again.

They answered and said, “John the Baptist, and others say Elijah; but others, that one of the prophets of old has risen again.”

20 H e said unto them, But who do ye say that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.

And He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered and said, “ The Christ of God.”

21 A nd he straitly charged them and commanded them not to tell anyone this,

But He warned them and instructed them not to tell this to anyone,

22 s aying, The Son of man must suffer many things and be rejected of the elders and of the princes of the priests and scribes and be slain and be raised the third day.

saying, “ The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day.”

23 A nd he said to them all, If anyone will come after me, let them deny themself and take up their cross daily and follow me.

And He was saying to them all, “ If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.

24 F or whosoever desires to save his soul shall lose it, but whosoever will lose his soul for my sake, the same shall save it.

For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it.

25 F or what is a man advantaged if he gains the whole world, having destroyed himself or having suffered the loss of himself?

For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself?

26 F or whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed when he shall come in his own glory and in his Father’s and of the holy angels.

For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

27 B ut I tell you in truth, there are some standing here who shall not taste of death until they see the kingdom of God.

But I say to you truthfully, there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.” The Transfiguration

28 And it came to pass about eight days after these words, he took Peter and John and James and went up into the mountain to pray.

Some eight days after these sayings, He took along Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray.

29 A nd as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.

And while He was praying, the appearance of His face became different, and His clothing became white and gleaming.

30 A nd, behold, two men talked with him, who were Moses and Elijah,

And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah,

31 w ho appeared in majesty and spoke of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.

who, appearing in glory, were speaking of His departure which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.

32 B ut Peter and those that were with him were heavy with sleep, and when they awoke, they saw his glory and the two men that stood with him.

Now Peter and his companions had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him.

33 A nd it came to pass as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to remain here; and let us make three tabernacles: one for thee and one for Moses and one for Elijah, not knowing what he said.

And as these were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, “ Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah”— not realizing what he was saying.

34 W hile he was speaking this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they feared as they entered into the cloud.

While he was saying this, a cloud formed and began to overshadow them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.

35 A nd a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son; hear him.

Then a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “ This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!”

36 A nd when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and told no one in those days any of those things which they had seen.

And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent, and reported to no one in those days any of the things which they had seen.

37 And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the mountain, many people met him.

On the next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Him.

38 A nd, behold, a man of the multitude cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son, for he is my only child.

And a man from the crowd shouted, saying, “Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, for he is my only boy,

39 A nd, behold, a spirit takes him, and he suddenly cries out; and it throws him into convulsions with foaming, and with difficulty it departs from him, bruising him.

and a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly screams, and it throws him into a convulsion with foaming at the mouth; and only with difficulty does it leave him, mauling him as it leaves.

40 A nd I besought thy disciples to cast him out, and they could not.

I begged Your disciples to cast it out, and they could not.”

41 A nd Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and suffer you? Bring thy son here.

And Jesus answered and said, “You unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.”

42 A nd as he was yet a coming, the demon threw him down into convulsions; but Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the child and delivered him again to his father.

While he was still approaching, the demon slammed him to the ground and threw him into a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy and gave him back to his father.

43 And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they all wondered at all the things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,

And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. But while everyone was marveling at all that He was doing, He said to His disciples,

44 L et these words sink down into your ears, for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.

“Let these words sink into your ears; for the Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.”

45 B ut they did not understand this word, and it was hid from them that they should not understand, and they feared to ask him regarding this.

But they did not understand this statement, and it was concealed from them so that they would not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this statement. The Test of Greatness

46 T hen there arose a dispute among them, which of them should be the greatest.

An argument started among them as to which of them might be the greatest.

47 B ut Jesus, seeing the thoughts of their heart, took a child and set him by him,

But Jesus, knowing what they were thinking in their heart, took a child and stood him by His side,

48 a nd said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receives me, and whosoever shall receive me receives him that sent me; for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.

and said to them, “ Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; for the one who is least among all of you, this is the one who is great.”

49 A nd John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out demons in thy name; and we forbade him, because he does not follow with us.

John answered and said, “ Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name; and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow along with us.”

50 A nd Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not, for he that is not against us is for us.

But Jesus said to him, “Do not hinder him; for he who is not against you is for you.”

51 And it came to pass when the time was come that he should be received up, he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem

When the days were approaching for His ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem;

52 a nd sent messengers before his face; and they went and entered into a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him.

and He sent messengers on ahead of Him, and they went and entered a village of the Samaritans to make arrangements for Him.

53 A nd they did not receive him because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.

But they did not receive Him, because He was traveling toward Jerusalem.

54 A nd when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, even as Elijah did?

When His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?”

55 B ut he turned and rebuked them and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.

But He turned and rebuked them, '> and said, “You do not know what kind of spirit you are of;

56 F or the Son of man is not come to lose men’s souls, but to save them. And they went to another village.

for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.” ] And they went on to another village. Exacting Discipleship

57 And it came to pass that as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.

As they were going along the road, someone said to Him, “I will follow You wherever You go.”

58 A nd Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the heaven have nests, but the Son of man has not where to lay his head.

And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”

59 A nd he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father.

And He said to another, “ Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.”

60 J esus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead, but go thou and declare the kingdom of God.

But He said to him, “Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim everywhere the kingdom of God.”

61 A nd another also said, Lord, I will follow thee, but let me first go bid farewell those who are at home at my house.

Another also said, “I will follow You, Lord; but first permit me to say good-bye to those at home.”

62 A nd Jesus said unto him, No one having put his hand to the plough and looking back is fit for the kingdom of God.

But Jesus said to him, “ No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
