1 P artieron los hijos de Israel y acamparon en los campos de Moab, junto al Jordán, frente a Jericó.

And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in the plains of Moab on this side Jordan by Jericho.

2 V io Balac hijo de Zipor todo lo que Israel había hecho al amorreo,

And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.

3 y sintió Moab un gran temor por aquel pueblo, pues era muy numeroso. Se angustió Moab a causa de los hijos de Israel,

And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel.

4 y dijo a los ancianos de Madián: «Ahora esta gente va a devorar todos nuestros contornos, como devora el buey la grama del campo.» Balac hijo de Zipor, que entonces era rey de Moab,

And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now shall this company lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time.

5 e nvió mensajeros a Balaam hijo de Beor, en Petor, que está junto al río en la tierra de los hijos de su pueblo, para que lo llamaran, diciendo: «Un pueblo que ha salido de Egipto cubre toda la tierra y se ha establecido frente a mí.

He sent messengers therefore unto Balaam the son of Beor to Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me:

6 V en pues, ahora, te ruego, y maldíceme a este pueblo, porque es más fuerte que yo; quizá yo pueda herirlo y echarlo de la tierra, pues yo sé que el que tú bendigas bendito quedará, y el que tú maldigas maldito quedará.»

come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me: peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land: for I wot that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.

7 P artieron los ancianos de Moab y los ancianos de Madián con las dádivas de adivinación en sus manos. Llegaron a Balaam y le comunicaron las palabras de Balac.

And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spake unto him the words of Balak.

8 B alaam les respondió: —Reposad aquí esta noche, y yo os responderé según Jehová me hable. Así los príncipes de Moab se quedaron con Balaam.

And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as the Lord shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.

9 E ntonces se le apareció Dios a Balaam y le preguntó: —¿Quiénes son estos que están contigo?

And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee?

10 B alaam respondió a Dios: —Balac hijo de Zipor, rey de Moab, ha enviado a decirme:

And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying,

11 “ Este pueblo que ha salido de Egipto cubre toda la tierra. Ven pues, ahora, y maldícemelo; quizá podré pelear contra él y echarlo.”

Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth: come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out.

12 E ntonces dijo Dios a Balaam: —No vayas con ellos ni maldigas al pueblo, porque bendito es.

And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed.

13 B alaam se levantó por la mañana y dijo a los príncipes de Balac: —Volveos a vuestra tierra, porque Jehová no me quiere dejar ir con vosotros.

And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land: for the Lord refuseth to give me leave to go with you.

14 L os príncipes de Moab se levantaron, regresaron a donde estaba Balac y le dijeron: —Balaam no quiso venir con nosotros.

And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Balaam refuseth to come with us.

15 O tra vez volvió Balac a enviar príncipes, en mayor número y más honorables que los otros,

And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honourable than they.

16 l os cuales fueron a ver a Balaam y le dijeron: —Así dice Balac hijo de Zipor: “Te ruego que no dejes de venir a mí,

And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me:

17 p ues sin duda te honraré mucho y haré todo lo que me digas. Ven, pues, ahora, y maldíceme a este pueblo.”

for I will promote thee unto very great honour, and I will do whatsoever thou sayest unto me: come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people.

18 B alaam respondió a los siervos de Balac: —Aunque Balac me diera su casa llena de plata y oro, no puedo traspasar la palabra de Jehová, mi Dios, para hacer cosa chica ni grande.

And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do less or more.

19 O s ruego, por tanto, ahora, que reposéis aquí esta noche, para que yo sepa qué me vuelve a decir Jehová.

Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the Lord will say unto me more.

20 Y se le apareció Dios a Balaam de noche, y le dijo: «Si vinieron para llamarte estos hombres, levántate y vete con ellos; pero harás lo que yo te diga.» El ángel y el asna de Balaam

And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men come to call thee, rise up, and go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do.

21 B alaam se levantó por la mañana, ensilló su asna y se fue con los príncipes de Moab.

And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.

22 P ero la ira de Dios se encendió porque él iba, y el ángel de Jehová se puso en el camino como un adversario suyo. Iba, pues, él montado sobre su asna, y con él dos criados suyos.

And God’s anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the Lord stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.

23 C uando el asna vio al ángel de Jehová, que estaba en el camino con la espada desnuda en la mano, se apartó del camino y se fue por el campo. Entonces azotó Balaam al asna para hacerla volver al camino.

And the ass saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.

24 P ero el ángel de Jehová se puso en una senda de viñas que tenía pared a un lado y pared al otro.

But the angel of the Lord stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.

25 A l ver el asna al ángel de Jehová, se pegó a la pared, y apretó contra la pared el pie de Balaam. Él volvió a azotarla.

And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall: and he smote her again.

26 E l ángel de Jehová pasó más allá, y se puso en un sendero angosto donde no había camino para apartarse ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda.

And the angel of the Lord went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.

27 C uando el asna vio al ángel de Jehová, se echó al suelo debajo de Balaam. Balaam se enojó y azotó al asna con un palo.

And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she fell down under Balaam: and Balaam’s anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff.

28 E ntonces Jehová abrió la boca al asna, la cual dijo a Balaam: —¿Qué te he hecho, que me has azotado estas tres veces?

And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?

29 — Porque te has burlado de mí —respondió Balaam al asna—. ¡Si tuviera una espada en mi mano, ahora mismo te mataría!

And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.

30 E l asna dijo a Balaam: —¿No soy yo tu asna? Sobre mí has cabalgado desde que tú me tienes hasta este día ¿Acaso acostumbro a portarme así contigo? —No —respondió él.

And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? And he said, Nay.

31 E ntonces Jehová abrió los ojos de Balaam, que vio al ángel de Jehová en medio del camino, con la espada desnuda en la mano. Balaam hizo una reverencia y se postró sobre su rostro.

Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.

32 E l ángel de Jehová le dijo: —¿Por qué has azotado a tu asna estas tres veces? Yo soy el que ha salido a resistirte, porque tu camino es perverso delante de mí.

And the angel of the Lord said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me:

33 E l asna me ha visto y se ha apartado de mí estas tres veces. Y si de mí no se hubiera apartado, ya te hubiera matado a ti, y a ella la habría dejado viva.

and the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.

34 E ntonces Balaam dijo al ángel de Jehová: —He pecado, porque no sabía que tú te ponías delante de mí en el camino; pero ahora, si te parece mal, yo regresaré.

And Balaam said unto the angel of the Lord, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again.

35 P ero el ángel de Jehová respondió a Balaam: —Ve con esos hombres; pero la palabra que yo te diga, ésa hablarás. Así Balaam se fue con los príncipes de Balac.

And the angel of the Lord said unto Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

36 C uando Balac oyó que Balaam venía, salió a recibirlo a la ciudad de Moab, que está junto al límite de Arnón, en los confines de su territorio.

And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto a city of Moab, which is in the border of Arnon, which is in the utmost coast.

37 Y Balac dijo a Balaam: —¿No envié yo a llamarte? ¿Por qué no has venido ante mí? ¿No puedo yo honrarte?

And Balak said unto Balaam, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore camest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honour?

38 B alaam respondió a Balac: —Mira, ya he venido ante ti; pero ¿podré ahora decir alguna cosa? La palabra que Dios ponga en mi boca, ésa hablaré.

And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to say any thing? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.

39 L uego fue Balaam con Balac, y llegaron a Quiriat-huzot.

And Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kirjath-huzoth.

40 B alac hizo matar bueyes y ovejas, y lo envió a Balaam y a los príncipes que estaban con él. Balaam bendice a Israel

And Balak offered oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.

41 A l día siguiente, Balac tomó a Balaam y lo hizo subir a Bamot-baal, y desde allí vio una parte del pueblo.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal, that thence he might see the utmost part of the people.
