1 W herefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;
Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession;
2 W ho was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.
He was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was in all His house.
3 F or this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.
For He has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, by just so much as the builder of the house has more honor than the house.
4 F or every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.
For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.
5 A nd Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;
Now Moses was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken later;
6 B ut Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.
but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house— whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end.
7 W herefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,
Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says, “ Today if you hear His voice,
8 H arden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
Do not harden your hearts as when they provoked Me, As in the day of trial in the wilderness,
9 W hen your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.
Where your fathers tried Me by testing Me, And saw My works for forty years.
10 W herefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.
“ Therefore I was angry with this generation, And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart, And they did not know My ways ’;
11 S o I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)
As I swore in My wrath, ‘ They shall not enter My rest.’” The Peril of Unbelief
12 T ake heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God.
13 B ut exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
14 F or we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;
For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end,
15 W hile it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
while it is said, “ Today if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts, as when they provoked Me.”
16 F or some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.
For who provoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses?
17 B ut with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?
And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?
18 A nd to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?
And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were disobedient?
19 S o we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
So we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.
