1 A gain in the ninth year, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

And the word of the Lord came to me in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth of the month, saying,

2 S on of man, write thee the name of the day, even of this same day: the king of Babylon set himself against Jerusalem this same day.

“Son of man, write the name of the day, this very day. The king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem this very day.

3 A nd utter a parable unto the rebellious house, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Set on a pot, set it on, and also pour water into it:

Speak a parable to the rebellious house and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “Put on the pot, put it on and also pour water in it;

4 G ather the pieces thereof into it, even every good piece, the thigh, and the shoulder; fill it with the choice bones.

Put in it the pieces, Every good piece, the thigh and the shoulder; Fill it with choice bones.

5 T ake the choice of the flock, and burn also the bones under it, and make it boil well, and let them seethe the bones of it therein.

“Take the choicest of the flock, And also pile wood under the pot. Make it boil vigorously. Also seethe its bones in it.”

6 W herefore thus saith the Lord God; Woe to the bloody city, to the pot whose scum is therein, and whose scum is not gone out of it! bring it out piece by piece; let no lot fall upon it.

‘Therefore, thus says the Lord God, “Woe to the bloody city, To the pot in which there is rust And whose rust has not gone out of it! Take out of it piece after piece, Without making a choice.

7 F or her blood is in the midst of her; she set it upon the top of a rock; she poured it not upon the ground, to cover it with dust;

“For her blood is in her midst; She placed it on the bare rock; She did not pour it on the ground To cover it with dust.

8 T hat it might cause fury to come up to take vengeance; I have set her blood upon the top of a rock, that it should not be covered.

“That it may cause wrath to come up to take vengeance, I have put her blood on the bare rock, That it may not be covered.”

9 T herefore thus saith the Lord God; Woe to the bloody city! I will even make the pile for fire great.

‘Therefore, thus says the Lord God, “ Woe to the bloody city! I also will make the pile great.

10 H eap on wood, kindle the fire, consume the flesh, and spice it well, and let the bones be burned.

“Heap on the wood, kindle the fire, Boil the flesh well And mix in the spices, And let the bones be burned.

11 T hen set it empty upon the coals thereof, that the brass of it may be hot, and may burn, and that the filthiness of it may be molten in it, that the scum of it may be consumed.

“Then set it empty on its coals So that it may be hot And its bronze may glow And its filthiness may be melted in it, Its rust consumed.

12 S he hath wearied herself with lies, and her great scum went not forth out of her: her scum shall be in the fire.

“She has wearied Me with toil, Yet her great rust has not gone from her; Let her rust be in the fire!

13 I n thy filthiness is lewdness: because I have purged thee, and thou wast not purged, thou shalt not be purged from thy filthiness any more, till I have caused my fury to rest upon thee.

“In your filthiness is lewdness. Because I would have cleansed you, Yet you are not clean, You will not be cleansed from your filthiness again Until I have spent My wrath on you.

14 I the Lord have spoken it: it shall come to pass, and I will do it; I will not go back, neither will I spare, neither will I repent; according to thy ways, and according to thy doings, shall they judge thee, saith the Lord God.

I, the Lord, have spoken; it is coming and I will act. I will not relent, and I will not pity and I will not be sorry; according to your ways and according to your deeds I will judge you,” declares the Lord God.’” Death of Ezekiel’s Wife Is a Sign

15 A lso the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

And the word of the Lord came to me saying,

16 S on of man, behold, I take away from thee the desire of thine eyes with a stroke: yet neither shalt thou mourn nor weep, neither shall thy tears run down.

“Son of man, behold, I am about to take from you the desire of your eyes with a blow; but you shall not mourn and you shall not weep, and your tears shall not come.

17 F orbear to cry, make no mourning for the dead, bind the tire of thine head upon thee, and put on thy shoes upon thy feet, and cover not thy lips, and eat not the bread of men.

Groan silently; make no mourning for the dead. Bind on your turban and put your shoes on your feet, and do not cover your mustache and do not eat the bread of men.”

18 S o I spake unto the people in the morning: and at even my wife died; and I did in the morning as I was commanded.

So I spoke to the people in the morning, and in the evening my wife died. And in the morning I did as I was commanded.

19 A nd the people said unto me, Wilt thou not tell us what these things are to us, that thou doest so?

The people said to me, “Will you not tell us what these things that you are doing mean for us?”

20 T hen I answered them, The word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

Then I said to them, “The word of the Lord came to me saying,

21 S peak unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will profane my sanctuary, the excellency of your strength, the desire of your eyes, and that which your soul pitieth; and your sons and your daughters whom ye have left shall fall by the sword.

‘Speak to the house of Israel, “Thus says the Lord God, ‘Behold, I am about to profane My sanctuary, the pride of your power, the desire of your eyes and the delight of your soul; and your sons and your daughters whom you have left behind will fall by the sword.

22 A nd ye shall do as I have done: ye shall not cover your lips, nor eat the bread of men.

You will do as I have done; you will not cover your mustache and you will not eat the bread of men.

23 A nd your tires shall be upon your heads, and your shoes upon your feet: ye shall not mourn nor weep; but ye shall pine away for your iniquities, and mourn one toward another.

Your turbans will be on your heads and your shoes on your feet. You will not mourn and you will not weep, but you will rot away in your iniquities and you will groan to one another.

24 T hus Ezekiel is unto you a sign: according to all that he hath done shall ye do: and when this cometh, ye shall know that I am the Lord God.

Thus Ezekiel will be a sign to you; according to all that he has done you will do; when it comes, then you will know that I am the Lord God.’”

25 A lso, thou son of man, shall it not be in the day when I take from them their strength, the joy of their glory, the desire of their eyes, and that whereupon they set their minds, their sons and their daughters,

‘As for you, son of man, will it not be on the day when I take from them their stronghold, the joy of their pride, the desire of their eyes and their heart’s delight, their sons and their daughters,

26 T hat he that escapeth in that day shall come unto thee, to cause thee to hear it with thine ears?

that on that day he who escapes will come to you with information for your ears?

27 I n that day shall thy mouth be opened to him which is escaped, and thou shalt speak, and be no more dumb: and thou shalt be a sign unto them; and they shall know that I am the Lord.

On that day your mouth will be opened to him who escaped, and you will speak and be mute no longer. Thus you will be a sign to them, and they will know that I am the Lord.’”
