1 T hese things I have spoken unto you that ye may not be offended.

“These things have I spoken to you, so that you wouldn’t be caused to stumble.

2 T hey shall put you out of the synagogues; but the hour is coming that every one who kills you will think to render service to God;

They will put you out of the synagogues. Yes, the time comes that whoever kills you will think that he offers service to God.

3 a nd these things they will do because they have not known the Father nor me.

They will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me.

4 B ut I have spoken these things to you, that when their hour shall have come, ye may remember them, that I have said unto you. But I did not say these things unto you from beginning, because I was with you.

But I have told you these things, so that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you about them. I didn’t tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.

5 B ut now I go to him that has sent me, and none of you demands of me, Where goest thou?

But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’

6 B ut because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.

But because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled your heart.

7 B ut I say the truth to you, It is profitable for you that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I go I will send him to you.

Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I don’t go away, the Counselor won’t come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.

8 A nd having come, he will bring demonstration to the world, of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

When he has come, he will convict the world about sin, about righteousness, and about judgment;

9 o f sin, because they do not believe on me;

about sin, because they don’t believe in me;

10 o f righteousness, because I go away to Father, and ye behold me no longer;

about righteousness, because I am going to my Father, and you won’t see me any more;

11 o f judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

about judgment, because the prince of this world has been judged.

12 I have yet many things to say to you, but ye cannot bear them now.

“I have yet many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now.

13 B ut when he is come, the Spirit of truth, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but whatsoever he shall hear he shall speak; and he will announce to you what is coming.

However when he, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will guide you into all truth, for he will not speak from himself; but whatever he hears, he will speak. He will declare to you things that are coming.

14 H e shall glorify me, for he shall receive of mine and shall announce to you.

He will glorify me, for he will take from what is mine, and will declare it to you.

15 A ll things that the Father has are mine; on account of this I have said that he receives of mine and shall announce to you.

All things whatever the Father has are mine; therefore I said that he takes of mine, and will declare it to you.

16 A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me,.

A little while, and you will not see me. Again a little while, and you will see me.”

17 o f his disciples therefore said to one another, What is this he says to us, A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me, and, Because I go away to the Father?

Some of his disciples therefore said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you won’t see me, and again a little while, and you will see me;’ and, ‘Because I go to the Father’ ?”

18 T hey said therefore, What is this which he says the little while? We do not know what he speaks.

They said therefore, “What is this that he says, ‘A little while’ ? We don’t know what he is saying.”

19 J esus knew therefore that they desired to demand of him, and said to them, Do ye inquire of this among yourselves that I said, A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me?

Therefore Jesus perceived that they wanted to ask him, and he said to them, “Do you inquire among yourselves concerning this, that I said, ‘A little while, and you won’t see me, and again a little while, and you will see me?’

20 V erily, verily, I say to you, that ye shall weep and lament, ye, but the world shall rejoice; and ye will be grieved, but your grief shall be turned to joy.

Most certainly I tell you, that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.

21 A woman, when she gives birth to a child, has grief because her hour has come; but when the child is born, she no longer remembers the trouble, on account of the joy that a man has been born into the world.

A woman, when she gives birth, has sorrow, because her time has come. But when she has delivered the child, she doesn’t remember the anguish any more, for the joy that a human being is born into the world.

22 A nd ye now therefore have grief; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one takes from you.

Therefore you now have sorrow, but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.

23 A nd in that day ye shall demand nothing of me: verily, verily, I say to you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give you.

“In that day you will ask me no questions. Most certainly I tell you, whatever you may ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.

24 H itherto ye have asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

Until now, you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be made full.

25 T hese things I have spoken to you in allegories; the hour is coming that I will no longer speak to you in allegories, but will declare to you openly concerning the Father.

I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. But the time is coming when I will no more speak to you in figures of speech, but will tell you plainly about the Father.

26 I n that day ye shall ask in my name; and I say not to you that I will demand of the Father for you,

In that day you will ask in my name; and I don’t say to you, that I will pray to the Father for you,

27 f or the Father himself has affection for you, because ye have had affection for me, and have believed that I came out from God.

for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came from God.

28 I came out from the Father and have come into the world; again, I leave the world and go to the Father.

I came from the Father, and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.”

29 H is disciples say to him, Lo, now thou speakest openly and utterest no allegory.

His disciples said to him, “Behold, now you speak plainly, and speak no figures of speech.

30 N ow we know that thou knowest all things, and hast not need that any one should demand of thee. By this we believe that thou art come from God.

Now we know that you know all things, and don’t need for anyone to question you. By this we believe that you came from God.”

31 J esus answered them, Do ye now believe?

Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?

32 B ehold, hour is coming, and has come, that ye shall be scattered, each to his own, and shall leave me alone; and I am not alone, for the Father is with me.

Behold, the time is coming, yes, and has now come, that you will be scattered, everyone to his own place, and you will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

33 T hese things have I spoken to you that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye have tribulation; but be of good courage: I have overcome the world.

I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have oppression; but cheer up! I have overcome the world.”
