1 W hat then shall we say? Should we continue in sin that grace may abound?
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2 F ar be the thought. We who have died to sin, how shall we still live in it?
May it never be! We who died to sin, how could we live in it any longer?
3 A re you ignorant that we, as many as have been baptised unto Christ Jesus, have been baptised unto his death?
Or don’t you know that all we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?
4 W e have been buried therefore with him by baptism unto death, in order that, even as Christ has been raised up from among dead by the glory of the Father, so we also should walk in newness of life.
We were buried therefore with him through baptism to death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life.
5 F or if we are become identified with in the likeness of his death, so also we shall be of resurrection;
For if we have become united with him in the likeness of his death, we will also be part of his resurrection;
6 k nowing this, that our old man has been crucified with, that the body of sin might be annulled, that we should no longer serve sin.
knowing this, that our old man was crucified with him, that the body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be in bondage to sin.
7 F or he that has died is justified from sin.
For he who has died has been freed from sin.
8 N ow if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him,
But if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him;
9 k nowing that Christ having been raised up from among dead dies no more: death has dominion over him no more.
knowing that Christ, being raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no more has dominion over him!
10 F or in that he has died, he has died to sin once for all; but in that he lives, he lives to God.
For the death that he died, he died to sin one time; but the life that he lives, he lives to God.
11 S o also ye, reckon yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Thus consider yourselves also to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
12 L et not sin therefore reign in your mortal body to obey its lusts.
Therefore don’t let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.
13 N either yield your members instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but yield yourselves to God as alive from among dead, and your members instruments of righteousness to God.
Also, do not present your members to sin as instruments of unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God, as alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
14 F or sin shall not have dominion over you, for ye are not under law but under grace.
For sin will not have dominion over you. For you are not under law, but under grace.
15 W hat then? should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Far be the thought.
What then? Shall we sin, because we are not under law, but under grace? May it never be!
16 K now ye not that to whom ye yield yourselves bondmen for obedience, ye are bondmen to him whom ye obey, whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
Don’t you know that when you present yourselves as servants and obey someone, you are the servants of whomever you obey; whether of sin to death, or of obedience to righteousness?
17 B ut thanks to God, that ye were bondmen of sin, but have obeyed from the heart the form of teaching into which ye were instructed.
But thanks be to God, that, whereas you were bondservants of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were delivered.
18 N ow, having got your freedom from sin, ye have become bondmen to righteousness.
Being made free from sin, you became bondservants of righteousness.
19 I speak humanly on account of the weakness of your flesh. For even as ye have yielded your members in bondage to uncleanness and to lawlessness unto lawlessness, so now yield your members in bondage to righteousness unto holiness.
I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh, for as you presented your members as servants to uncleanness and to wickedness upon wickedness, even so now present your members as servants to righteousness for sanctification.
20 F or when ye were bondmen of sin ye were free from righteousness.
For when you were servants of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.
21 W hat fruit therefore had ye then in the things of which ye are now ashamed? for the end of them death.
What fruit then did you have at that time in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.
22 B ut now, having got your freedom from sin, and having become bondmen to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end eternal life.
But now, being made free from sin, and having become servants of God, you have your fruit of sanctification, and the result of eternal life.
23 F or the wages of sin death; but the act of favour of God, eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
