1 A nd when they draw near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sends two of his disciples,

When they came near to Jerusalem, to Bethsphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,

2 a nd says to them, Go into the village which is over against you, and immediately on entering into it ye will find a colt tied, upon which no of man has ever sat: loose it and lead it.

and said to them, “Go your way into the village that is opposite you. Immediately as you enter into it, you will find a young donkey tied, on which no one has sat. Untie him, and bring him.

3 A nd if any one say to you, Why do ye this? say, The Lord has need of it; and straightway he sends it hither.

If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs him;’ and immediately he will send him back here.”

4 A nd they departed, and found a colt bound to the door without at the crossway, and they loose him.

They went away, and found a young donkey tied at the door outside in the open street, and they untied him.

5 A nd some of those who stood there said to them, What are ye doing, loosing the colt?

Some of those who stood there asked them, “What are you doing, untying the young donkey?”

6 A nd they said to them as Jesus had commanded. And they let them.

They said to them just as Jesus had said, and they let them go.

7 A nd they led the colt to Jesus, and cast their clothes upon it, and he sat on it;

They brought the young donkey to Jesus, and threw their garments on it, and Jesus sat on it.

8 a nd many strewed their clothes on the way, and others cut down branches from the trees.

Many spread their garments on the way, and others were cutting down branches from the trees, and spreading them on the road.

9 A nd those going on before and those following cried out, Hosanna! blessed he that comes in Lord's name.

Those who went in front, and those who followed, cried out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

10 B lessed the coming kingdom of our father David. Hosanna in the highest!

Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is coming in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”

11 A nd he entered into Jerusalem and into the temple; and having looked round on all things, the hour being already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

Jesus entered into the temple in Jerusalem. When he had looked around at everything, it being now evening, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

12 A nd on the morrow, when they were gone out of Bethany, he hungered.

The next day, when they had come out from Bethany, he was hungry.

13 A nd seeing from afar off a fig-tree which had leaves, he came, if perhaps he might find something on it. And having come up to it he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the time of figs.

Seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came to see if perhaps he might find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs.

14 A nd answering he said to it, Let no one eat fruit of thee any more for ever. And his disciples heard.

Jesus told it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!” and his disciples heard it.

15 A nd they come to Jerusalem, and entering into the temple, he began to cast out those who sold and who bought in the temple, and he overthrew the tables of the moneychangers and the seats of the dove-sellers,

They came to Jerusalem, and Jesus entered into the temple, and began to throw out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money changers, and the seats of those who sold the doves.

16 a nd suffered not that any one should carry any package through the temple.

He would not allow anyone to carry a container through the temple.

17 A nd he taught saying to them, Is it not written, My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations? but ye have made it a den of robbers.

He taught, saying to them, “Isn’t it written, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations?’ But you have made it a den of robbers!”

18 A nd the chief priests and the scribes heard, and they sought how they might destroy him; for they feared him, because all the crowd were astonished at his doctrine.

The chief priests and the scribes heard it, and sought how they might destroy him. For they feared him, because all the multitude was astonished at his teaching.

19 A nd when it was evening he went forth without the city.

When evening came, he went out of the city.

20 A nd passing by early in the morning they saw the fig-tree dried up from the roots.

As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away from the roots.

21 A nd Peter, remembering, says to him, Rabbi, see, the fig-tree which thou cursedst is dried up.

Peter, remembering, said to him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree which you cursed has withered away.”

22 A nd Jesus answering says to them, Have faith in God.

Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God.

23 V erily I say to you, that whosoever shall say to this mountain, Be thou taken away and cast into the sea, and shall not doubt in his heart, but believe that what he says takes place, whatever he shall say shall come to pass for him.

For most certainly I tell you, whoever may tell this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and doesn’t doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is happening; he shall have whatever he says.

24 F or this reason I say to you, All things whatsoever ye pray for and ask, believe that ye receive it, and it shall come to pass for you.

Therefore I tell you, all things whatever you pray and ask for, believe that you have received them, and you shall have them.

25 A nd when ye stand praying, forgive if ye have anything against any one, that your Father also who is in the heavens may forgive you your offences.

Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father, who is in heaven, may also forgive you your transgressions.

26 B ut if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father who is in the heavens forgive your offences.

But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your transgressions.”

27 A nd they come again to Jerusalem. And as he walked about in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders come to him,

They came again to Jerusalem, and as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders came to him,

28 a nd they say to him, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority, that thou shouldest do these things?

and they began saying to him, “By what authority do you do these things? Or who gave you this authority to do these things?”

29 A nd Jesus answering said to them, I also will ask you one thing, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things:

Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.

30 T he baptism of John, was it of heaven, or of men? answer me.

The baptism of John—was it from heaven, or from men? Answer me.”

31 A nd they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we should say, Of heaven, he will say, Why have ye not believed him?

They reasoned with themselves, saying, “If we should say, ‘From heaven;’ he will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’

32 b ut should we say, Of men—they feared the people; for all held of John that he was truly a prophet.

If we should say, ‘From men’”—they feared the people, for all held John to really be a prophet.

33 A nd they answering say to Jesus, We do not know. And Jesus says to them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

They answered Jesus, “We don’t know.” Jesus said to them, “Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
