1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?

O senseless Galatians, who has bewitched you; to whom, as before your very eyes, Jesus Christ has been portrayed, crucified ?

2 T his only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

This only I wish to learn of you, Have ye received the Spirit on the principle of works of law, or of report of faith?

3 A re ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?

Are ye so senseless? having begun in Spirit, are ye going to be made perfect in flesh?

4 H ave ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain.

Have ye suffered so many things in vain, if indeed also in vain?

5 H e therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

He therefore who ministers to you the Spirit, and works miracles among you, on the principle of works of law, or of report of faith?

6 E ven as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.

Even as Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.

7 K now ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

Know then that they that are on the principle of faith, these are Abraham's sons;

8 A nd the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.

and the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the nations on the principle of faith, announced beforehand the glad tidings to Abraham: In thee all the nations shall be blessed.

9 S o then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

So that they who are on the principle of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.

10 F or as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.

For as many as are on the principle of works of law are under curse. For it is written, Cursed is every one who does not continue in all things which written in the book of the law to do them;

11 B ut that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

but that by law no one is justified with God evident, because The just shall live on the principle of faith;

12 A nd the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.

but the law is not on the principle of faith; but, He that shall have done these things shall live by them.

13 C hrist hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

Christ has redeemed us out of the curse of the law, having become a curse for us, (for it is written, Cursed every one hanged upon a tree,)

14 T hat the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

that the blessing of Abraham might come to the nations in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

15 B rethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto.

Brethren, (I speak according to man,) even man's confirmed covenant no one sets aside, or adds other dispositions to.

16 N ow to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.

But to Abraham were the promises addressed, and to his seed: he does not say, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed; which is Christ.

17 A nd this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.

Now I say this, A covenant confirmed beforehand by God, the law, which took place four hundred and thirty years after, does not annul, so as to make the promise of no effect.

18 F or if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

For if the inheritance on the principle of law, no longer on the principle of promise; but God gave it in grace to Abraham by promise.

19 W herefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

Why then the law? It was added for the sake of transgressions, until the seed came to whom the promise was made, ordained through angels in hand of a mediator.

20 N ow a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.

But a mediator is not of one, but God is one.

21 I s the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.

then the law against the promises of God? Far be the thought. For if a law had been given able to quicken, then indeed righteousness were on the principle of law;

22 B ut the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

but the scripture has shut up all things under sin, that the promise, on the principle of faith of Jesus Christ, should be given to those that believe.

23 B ut before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.

But before faith came, we were guarded under law, shut up to faith about to be revealed.

24 W herefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

So that the law has been our tutor up to Christ, that we might be justified on the principle of faith.

25 B ut after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

But, faith having come, we are no longer under a tutor;

26 F or ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

for ye are all God's sons by faith in Christ Jesus.

27 F or as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

For ye, as many as have been baptised unto Christ, have put on Christ.

28 T here is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

There is no Jew nor Greek; there is no bondman nor freeman; there is no male and female; for ye are all one in Christ Jesus:

29 A nd if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

but if ye of Christ, then ye are Abraham's seed, heirs according to promise.
