Hebrews 12 ~ Hebrews 12

1 W herefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Let us also therefore, having so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, laying aside every weight, and sin which so easily entangles us, run with endurance the race that lies before us,

2 L ooking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

looking stedfastly on Jesus the leader and completer of faith: who, in view of the joy lying before him, endured cross, having despised shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

3 F or consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

For consider well him who endured so great contradiction from sinners against himself, that ye be not weary, fainting in your minds.

4 Y e have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.

Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, wrestling against sin.

5 A nd ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

And ye have quite forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: My son, despise not chastening of Lord, nor faint reproved by him;

6 F or whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

for whom Lord loves he chastens, and scourges every son whom he receives.

7 I f ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?

Ye endure for chastening, God conducts himself towards you as towards sons; for who is the son that the father chastens not?

8 B ut if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

But if ye are without chastening, of which all have been made partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

9 F urthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?

Moreover we have had the fathers of our flesh as chasteners, and we reverenced; shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live?

10 F or they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.

For they indeed chastened for a few days, as seemed good to them; but he for profit, in order to the partaking of his holiness.

11 N ow no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

But no chastening at the time seems to be of joy, but of grief; but afterwards yields peaceful fruit of righteousness to those exercised by it.

12 W herefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;

Wherefore lift up the hands that hang down, and the failing knees;

13 A nd make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.

and make straight paths for your feet, that that which is lame be not turned aside; but that rather it may be healed.

14 F ollow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

Pursue peace with all, and holiness, without which no one shall see the Lord:

15 L ooking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

watching lest any one who lacks the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble, and many be defiled by it;

16 L est there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.

lest any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one meal sold his birthright;

17 F or ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.

for ye know that also afterwards, desiring to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, (for he found no place for repentance) although he sought it earnestly with tears.

18 F or ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,

For ye have not come to that might be touched and was all on fire, and to obscurity, and darkness, and tempest,

19 A nd the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more:

and trumpet's sound, and voice of words; which they that heard, excusing themselves, declined word being addressed to them any more:

20 ( For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:

(for they were not able to bear what was enjoined: And if a beast should touch the mountain, it shall be stoned;

21 A nd so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)

and, so fearful was the sight, Moses said, I am exceedingly afraid and full of trembling;)

22 B ut ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,

but ye have come to mount Zion; and to city of living God, heavenly Jerusalem; and to myriads of angels,

23 T o the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,

the universal gathering; and to assembly of the firstborn registered in heaven; and to God, judge of all; and to spirits of just made perfect;

24 A nd to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

and to Jesus, mediator of a new covenant; and to blood of sprinkling, speaking better than Abel.

25 S ee that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:

See that ye refuse not him that speaks. For if those did not escape who had refused him who uttered the oracles on earth, much more we who turn away from him from heaven:

26 W hose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.

whose voice then shook the earth; but now he has promised, saying, Yet once will I shake not only the earth, but also the heaven.

27 A nd this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.

But this Yet once, signifies the removing of what is shaken, as being made, that what is not shaken may remain.

28 W herefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:

Wherefore let us, receiving a kingdom not to be shaken, have grace, by which let us serve God acceptably with reverence and fear.

29 F or our God is a consuming fire.

For also our God a consuming fire.
