1 T his second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:

This, a second letter, beloved, I already write to you, in which I stir up, in the way of putting you in remembrance, your pure mind,

2 T hat ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:

to be mindful of the words spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of the Lord and Saviour by your apostles;

3 K nowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,

knowing this first, that there shall come at close of the days mockers with mocking, walking according to their own lusts,

4 A nd saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for from the time the fathers fell asleep all things remain thus from beginning of creation.

5 F or this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:

For this is hidden from them through their own wilfulness, that heavens were of old, and an earth, having its subsistence out of water and in water, by the word of God,

6 W hereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:

through which the then world, deluged with water, perished.

7 B ut the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

But the present heavens and the earth by his word are laid up in store, kept for fire unto a day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

8 B ut, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

But let not this one thing be hidden from you, beloved, that one day with Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

9 T he Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Lord does not delay his promise, as some account of delay, but is longsuffering towards you, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

10 B ut the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

But the day of Lord will come as a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a rushing noise, and elements, burning with heat, shall be dissolved, and earth and the works in it shall be burnt up.

11 S eeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

All these things then being to be dissolved, what ought ye to be in holy conversation and godliness,

12 L ooking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, by reason of which heavens, being on fire, shall be dissolved, and elements, burning with heat, shall melt?

13 N evertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

But, according to his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwells righteousness.

14 W herefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

Wherefore, beloved, as ye wait for these things, be diligent to be found of him in peace, without spot and blameless;

15 A nd account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

and account the longsuffering of our Lord salvation; according as our beloved brother Paul also has written to you according to the wisdom given to him,

16 A s also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

as also in all epistles, speaking in them of these things; among which some things are hard to be understood, which the untaught and ill-established wrest, as also the other scriptures, to their own destruction.

17 Y e therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.

Ye therefore, beloved, knowing things before, take care lest, being led away along with the error of the wicked, ye should fall from your own stedfastness:

18 B ut grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

but grow in grace, and in knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him glory both now and to day of eternity. Amen.
