1 P aul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;
Paul, apostle of Jesus Christ, according to command of God our Saviour, and of Christ Jesus our hope,
2 U nto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.
to Timotheus, true child in faith: grace, mercy, peace, from God our Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 A s I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,
Even as I begged thee to remain in Ephesus, going to Macedonia, that thou mightest enjoin some not to teach other doctrines,
4 N either give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.
nor to turn their minds to fables and interminable genealogies, which bring questionings rather than God's dispensation, which in faith.
5 N ow the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:
But the end of what is enjoined is love out of a pure heart and a good conscience and unfeigned faith;
6 F rom which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;
which some having missed, have turned aside to vain discourse,
7 D esiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.
desiring to be law-teachers, not understanding either what they say or concerning what they strenuously affirm.
8 B ut we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;
Now we know that the law good if any one uses it lawfully,
9 K nowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
knowing this, that law has not its application to a righteous person, but to lawless and insubordinate, to impious and sinful, to unholy and profane, to smiters of fathers and smiters of mothers; to murderers,
10 F or whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
fornicators, sodomites, kidnappers, liars, perjurers; and if any other thing is opposed to sound teaching,
11 A ccording to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.
according to the glad tidings of the glory of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.
12 A nd I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;
I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me power, that he has counted me faithful, appointing to ministry him
13 W ho was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.
who before was a blasphemer and persecutor, and an insolent overbearing: but mercy was shewn me because I did it ignorantly, in unbelief.
14 A nd the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
But the grace of our Lord surpassingly over-abounded with faith and love, which in Christ Jesus.
15 T his is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.
Faithful the word, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am first.
16 H owbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.
But for this reason mercy was shewn me, that in me, first, Jesus Christ might display the whole long-suffering, for a delineation of those about to believe on him to life eternal.
17 N ow unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Now to the King of the ages, incorruptible, invisible, only God, honour and glory to the ages of ages. Amen.
18 T his charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;
This charge, child Timotheus, I commit to thee, according to the prophecies as to thee preceding, in order that thou mightest war by them the good warfare,
19 H olding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:
maintaining faith and a good conscience; which some, having put away, have made shipwreck as to faith;
20 O f whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.
of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have delivered to Satan, that they may be taught by discipline not to blaspheme.
