1 W hile Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper country, came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples.

And it came to pass, in Apollos' being in Corinth, Paul having gone through the upper parts, came to Ephesus, and having found certain disciples,

2 H e said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They said to him, “No, we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

he said unto them, `The Holy Spirit did ye receive -- having believed?' and they said unto him, `But we did not even hear whether there is any Holy Spirit;'

3 H e said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.”

and he said unto them, `To what, then, were ye baptized?' and they said, `To John's baptism.'

4 P aul said, “John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Jesus.”

And Paul said, `John, indeed, did baptize with a baptism of reformation, saying to the people that in him who is coming after him they should believe -- that is, in the Christ -- Jesus;'

5 W hen they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

and they, having heard, were baptized -- to the name of the Lord Jesus,

6 W hen Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke with other languages and prophesied.

and Paul having laid on them hands, the Holy Spirit came upon them, they were speaking also with tongues, and prophesying,

7 T hey were about twelve men in all.

and all the men were, as it were, twelve.

8 H e entered into the synagogue, and spoke boldly for a period of three months, reasoning and persuading about the things concerning God’s Kingdom.

And having gone into the synagogue, he was speaking boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading the things concerning the reign of God,

9 B ut when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.

and when certain were hardened and were disbelieving, speaking evil of the way before the multitude, having departed from them, he did separate the disciples, every day reasoning in the school of a certain Tyrannus.

10 T his continued for two years, so that all those who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

And this happened for two years so that all those dwelling in Asia did hear the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks,

11 G od worked special miracles by the hands of Paul,

mighty works also -- not common -- was God working through the hands of Paul,

12 s o that even handkerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and the evil spirits went out.

so that even unto the ailing were brought from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the sicknesses departed from them; the evil spirits also went forth from them.

13 B ut some of the itinerant Jews, exorcists, took on themselves to invoke over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, “We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches.”

And certain of the wandering exorcist Jews, took upon to name over those having the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, `We adjure you by Jesus, whom Paul doth preach;'

14 T here were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did this.

and there were certain -- seven sons of Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest -- who are doing this thing;

15 T he evil spirit answered, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are you?”

and the evil spirit, answering, said, `Jesus I know, and Paul I am acquainted with; and ye -- who are ye?'

16 T he man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

And the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaping upon them, and having overcome them, prevailed against them, so that naked and wounded they did flee out of that house,

17 T his became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived at Ephesus. Fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

and this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who are dwelling at Ephesus, and fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified,

18 M any also of those who had believed came, confessing, and declaring their deeds.

many also of those who did believe were coming, confessing and declaring their acts,

19 M any of those who practiced magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. They counted their price, and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver.

and many of those who had practised the curious arts, having brought the books together, were burning before all; and they reckoned together the prices of them, and found five myriads of silverlings;

20 S o the word of the Lord was growing and becoming mighty.

so powerfully was the word of God increasing and prevailing.

21 N ow after these things had ended, Paul determined in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.”

And when these things were fulfilled, Paul purposed in the Spirit, having gone through Macedonia and Achaia, to go on to Jerusalem, saying -- `After my being there, it behoveth me also to see Rome;'

22 H aving sent into Macedonia two of those who served him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.

and having sent to Macedonia two of those ministering to him -- Timotheus and Erastus -- he himself stayed a time in Asia.

23 A bout that time there arose no small stir concerning the Way.

And there came, at that time, not a little stir about the way,

24 F or a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen,

for a certain one, Demetrius by name, a worker in silver, making silver sanctuaries of Artemis, was bringing to the artificers gain not a little,

25 w hom he gathered together, with the workmen of like occupation, and said, “Sirs, you know that by this business we have our wealth.

whom, having brought in a crowd together, and those who did work about such things, he said, `Men, ye know that by this work we have our wealth;

26 Y ou see and hear, that not at Ephesus alone, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are no gods, that are made with hands.

and ye see and hear, that not only at Ephesus, but almost in all Asia, this Paul, having persuaded, did turn away a great multitude, saying, that they are not gods who are made by hands;

27 N ot only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be counted as nothing, and her majesty destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worships.”

and not only is this department in danger for us of coming into disregard, but also, that of the great goddess Artemis the temple is to be reckoned for nothing, and also her greatness is about to be brought down, whom all Asia and the world doth worship.'

28 W hen they heard this they were filled with anger, and cried out, saying, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

And they having heard, and having become full of wrath, were crying out, saying, `Great the Artemis of the Ephesians!'

29 T he whole city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theater, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel.

and the whole city was filled with confusion, they rushed also with one accord into the theatre, having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, Paul's fellow-travellers.

30 W hen Paul wanted to enter in to the people, the disciples didn’t allow him.

And on Paul's purposing to enter in unto the populace, the disciples were not suffering him,

31 C ertain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent to him and begged him not to venture into the theater.

and certain also of the chief men of Asia, being his friends, having sent unto him, were entreating him not to venture himself into the theatre.

32 S ome therefore cried one thing, and some another, for the assembly was in confusion. Most of them didn’t know why they had come together.

Some indeed, therefore, were calling out one thing, and some another, for the assembly was confused, and the greater part did not know for what they were come together;

33 T hey brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. Alexander beckoned with his hand, and would have made a defense to the people.

and out of the multitude they put forward Alexander -- the Jews thrusting him forward -- and Alexander having beckoned with the hand, wished to make defence to the populace,

34 B ut when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice for a time of about two hours cried out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

and having known that he is a Jew, one voice came out of all, for about two hours, crying, `Great the Artemis of the Ephesians!'

35 W hen the town clerk had quieted the multitude, he said, “You men of Ephesus, what man is there who doesn’t know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great goddess Artemis, and of the image which fell down from Zeus?

And the public clerk having quieted the multitude, saith, `Men, Ephesians, why, who is the man that doth not know that the city of the Ephesians is a devotee of the great goddess Artemis, and of that which fell down from Zeus?

36 S eeing then that these things can’t be denied, you ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rash.

these things, then, not being to be gainsaid, it is necessary for you to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.

37 F or you have brought these men here, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of your goddess.

`For ye brought these men, who are neither temple-robbers nor speaking evil of your goddess;

38 I f therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a matter against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls. Let them press charges against one another.

if indeed, therefore, Demetrius and the artificers with him with any one have a matter, court are held, and there are proconsuls; let them accuse one another.

39 B ut if you seek anything about other matters, it will be settled in the regular assembly.

`And if ye seek after anything concerning other matters, in the legal assembly it shall be determined;

40 F or indeed we are in danger of being accused concerning today’s riot, there being no cause. Concerning it, we wouldn’t be able to give an account of this commotion.”

for we are also in peril of being accused of insurrection in regard to this day, there being no occasion by which we shall be able to give an account of this concourse;'

41 W hen he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.

and these things having said, he dismissed the assembly.
