1 T hen the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

2 Son of man, make known to Jerusalem her abominations

“Son of man, cause Jerusalem to know her abominations,

3 a nd say, ‘Thus says the Lord God to Jerusalem, “Your origin and your birth are from the land of the Canaanite, your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.

and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God to Jerusalem: “Your birth and your nativity are from the land of Canaan; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.

4 A s for your birth, on the day you were born your navel cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water for cleansing; you were not rubbed with salt or even wrapped in cloths.

As for your nativity, on the day you were born your navel cord was not cut, nor were you washed in water to cleanse you; you were not rubbed with salt nor wrapped in swaddling cloths.

5 N o eye looked with pity on you to do any of these things for you, to have compassion on you. Rather you were thrown out into the open field, for you were abhorred on the day you were born.

No eye pitied you, to do any of these things for you, to have compassion on you; but you were thrown out into the open field, when you yourself were loathed on the day you were born.

6 When I passed by you and saw you squirming in your blood, I said to you while you were in your blood, ‘Live!’ Yes, I said to you while you were in your blood, ‘Live!’

“And when I passed by you and saw you struggling in your own blood, I said to you in your blood, ‘Live!’ Yes, I said to you in your blood, ‘Live!’

7 I made you numerous like plants of the field. Then you grew up, became tall and reached the age for fine ornaments; your breasts were formed and your hair had grown. Yet you were naked and bare.

I made you thrive like a plant in the field; and you grew, matured, and became very beautiful. Your breasts were formed, your hair grew, but you were naked and bare.

8 Then I passed by you and saw you, and behold, you were at the time for love; so I spread My skirt over you and covered your nakedness. I also swore to you and entered into a covenant with you so that you became Mine,” declares the Lord God.

“When I passed by you again and looked upon you, indeed your time was the time of love; so I spread My wing over you and covered your nakedness. Yes, I swore an oath to you and entered into a covenant with you, and you became Mine,” says the Lord God.

9 Then I bathed you with water, washed off your blood from you and anointed you with oil.

“Then I washed you in water; yes, I thoroughly washed off your blood, and I anointed you with oil.

10 I also clothed you with embroidered cloth and put sandals of porpoise skin on your feet; and I wrapped you with fine linen and covered you with silk.

I clothed you in embroidered cloth and gave you sandals of badger skin; I clothed you with fine linen and covered you with silk.

11 I adorned you with ornaments, put bracelets on your hands and a necklace around your neck.

I adorned you with ornaments, put bracelets on your wrists, and a chain on your neck.

12 I also put a ring in your nostril, earrings in your ears and a beautiful crown on your head.

And I put a jewel in your nose, earrings in your ears, and a beautiful crown on your head.

13 T hus you were adorned with gold and silver, and your dress was of fine linen, silk and embroidered cloth. You ate fine flour, honey and oil; so you were exceedingly beautiful and advanced to royalty.

Thus you were adorned with gold and silver, and your clothing was of fine linen, silk, and embroidered cloth. You ate pastry of fine flour, honey, and oil. You were exceedingly beautiful, and succeeded to royalty.

14 T hen your fame went forth among the nations on account of your beauty, for it was perfect because of My splendor which I bestowed on you,” declares the Lord God.

Your fame went out among the nations because of your beauty, for it was perfect through My splendor which I had bestowed on you,” says the Lord God. Jerusalem’s Harlotry

15 But you trusted in your beauty and played the harlot because of your fame, and you poured out your harlotries on every passer-by who might be willing.

“But you trusted in your own beauty, played the harlot because of your fame, and poured out your harlotry on everyone passing by who would have it.

16 Y ou took some of your clothes, made for yourself high places of various colors and played the harlot on them, which should never come about nor happen.

You took some of your garments and adorned multicolored high places for yourself, and played the harlot on them. Such things should not happen, nor be.

17 Y ou also took your beautiful jewels made of My gold and of My silver, which I had given you, and made for yourself male images that you might play the harlot with them.

You have also taken your beautiful jewelry from My gold and My silver, which I had given you, and made for yourself male images and played the harlot with them.

18 T hen you took your embroidered cloth and covered them, and offered My oil and My incense before them.

You took your embroidered garments and covered them, and you set My oil and My incense before them.

19 A lso My bread which I gave you, fine flour, oil and honey with which I fed you, you would offer before them for a soothing aroma; so it happened,” declares the Lord God.

Also My food which I gave you—the pastry of fine flour, oil, and honey which I fed you—you set it before them as sweet incense; and so it was,” says the Lord God.

20 Moreover, you took your sons and daughters whom you had borne to Me and sacrificed them to idols to be devoured. Were your harlotries so small a matter?

“Moreover you took your sons and your daughters, whom you bore to Me, and these you sacrificed to them to be devoured. Were your acts of harlotry a small matter,

21 Y ou slaughtered My children and offered them up to idols by causing them to pass through the fire.

that you have slain My children and offered them up to them by causing them to pass through the fire?

22 B esides all your abominations and harlotries you did not remember the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare and squirming in your blood.

And in all your abominations and acts of harlotry you did not remember the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare, struggling in your blood.

23 Then it came about after all your wickedness (‘Woe, woe to you!’ declares the Lord God ),

“Then it was so, after all your wickedness—‘Woe, woe to you!’ says the Lord God —

24 t hat you built yourself a shrine and made yourself a high place in every square.

that you also built for yourself a shrine, and made a high place for yourself in every street.

25 Y ou built yourself a high place at the top of every street and made your beauty abominable, and you spread your legs to every passer-by to multiply your harlotry.

You built your high places at the head of every road, and made your beauty to be abhorred. You offered yourself to everyone who passed by, and multiplied your acts of harlotry.

26 Y ou also played the harlot with the Egyptians, your lustful neighbors, and multiplied your harlotry to make Me angry.

You also committed harlotry with the Egyptians, your very fleshly neighbors, and increased your acts of harlotry to provoke Me to anger.

27 B ehold now, I have stretched out My hand against you and diminished your rations. And I delivered you up to the desire of those who hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who are ashamed of your lewd conduct.

“Behold, therefore, I stretched out My hand against you, diminished your allotment, and gave you up to the will of those who hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who were ashamed of your lewd behavior.

28 M oreover, you played the harlot with the Assyrians because you were not satisfied; you played the harlot with them and still were not satisfied.

You also played the harlot with the Assyrians, because you were insatiable; indeed you played the harlot with them and still were not satisfied.

29 Y ou also multiplied your harlotry with the land of merchants, Chaldea, yet even with this you were not satisfied.”’”

Moreover you multiplied your acts of harlotry as far as the land of the trader, Chaldea; and even then you were not satisfied.

30 How languishing is your heart,” declares the Lord God, “while you do all these things, the actions of a bold-faced harlot.

“How degenerate is your heart!” says the Lord God, “seeing you do all these things, the deeds of a brazen harlot. Jerusalem’s Adultery

31 W hen you built your shrine at the beginning of every street and made your high place in every square, in disdaining money, you were not like a harlot.

“You erected your shrine at the head of every road, and built your high place in every street. Yet you were not like a harlot, because you scorned payment.

32 Y ou adulteress wife, who takes strangers instead of her husband!

You are an adulterous wife, who takes strangers instead of her husband.

33 M en give gifts to all harlots, but you give your gifts to all your lovers to bribe them to come to you from every direction for your harlotries.

Men make payment to all harlots, but you made your payments to all your lovers, and hired them to come to you from all around for your harlotry.

34 T hus you are different from those women in your harlotries, in that no one plays the harlot as you do, because you give money and no money is given you; thus you are different.”

You are the opposite of other women in your harlotry, because no one solicited you to be a harlot. In that you gave payment but no payment was given you, therefore you are the opposite.” Jerusalem’s Lovers Will Abuse Her

35 T herefore, O harlot, hear the word of the Lord.

‘Now then, O harlot, hear the word of the Lord!

36 T hus says the Lord God, “Because your lewdness was poured out and your nakedness uncovered through your harlotries with your lovers and with all your detestable idols, and because of the blood of your sons which you gave to idols,

Thus says the Lord God: “Because your filthiness was poured out and your nakedness uncovered in your harlotry with your lovers, and with all your abominable idols, and because of the blood of your children which you gave to them,

37 t herefore, behold, I will gather all your lovers with whom you took pleasure, even all those whom you loved and all those whom you hated. So I will gather them against you from every direction and expose your nakedness to them that they may see all your nakedness.

surely, therefore, I will gather all your lovers with whom you took pleasure, all those you loved, and all those you hated; I will gather them from all around against you and will uncover your nakedness to them, that they may see all your nakedness.

38 T hus I will judge you like women who commit adultery or shed blood are judged; and I will bring on you the blood of wrath and jealousy.

And I will judge you as women who break wedlock or shed blood are judged; I will bring blood upon you in fury and jealousy.

39 I will also give you into the hands of your lovers, and they will tear down your shrines, demolish your high places, strip you of your clothing, take away your jewels, and will leave you naked and bare.

I will also give you into their hand, and they shall throw down your shrines and break down your high places. They shall also strip you of your clothes, take your beautiful jewelry, and leave you naked and bare.

40 T hey will incite a crowd against you and they will stone you and cut you to pieces with their swords.

“They shall also bring up an assembly against you, and they shall stone you with stones and thrust you through with their swords.

41 T hey will burn your houses with fire and execute judgments on you in the sight of many women. Then I will stop you from playing the harlot, and you will also no longer pay your lovers.

They shall burn your houses with fire, and execute judgments on you in the sight of many women; and I will make you cease playing the harlot, and you shall no longer hire lovers.

42 S o I will calm My fury against you and My jealousy will depart from you, and I will be pacified and angry no more.

So I will lay to rest My fury toward you, and My jealousy shall depart from you. I will be quiet, and be angry no more.

43 B ecause you have not remembered the days of your youth but have enraged Me by all these things, behold, I in turn will bring your conduct down on your own head,” declares the Lord God, “so that you will not commit this lewdness on top of all your other abominations.

Because you did not remember the days of your youth, but agitated Me with all these things, surely I will also recompense your deeds on your own head,” says the Lord God. “And you shall not commit lewdness in addition to all your abominations. More Wicked than Samaria and Sodom

44 Behold, everyone who quotes proverbs will quote this proverb concerning you, saying, ‘ Like mother, like daughter.’

“Indeed everyone who quotes proverbs will use this proverb against you: ‘Like mother, like daughter!’

45 Y ou are the daughter of your mother, who loathed her husband and children. You are also the sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.

You are your mother’s daughter, loathing husband and children; and you are the sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and children; your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.

46 N ow your older sister is Samaria, who lives north of you with her daughters; and your younger sister, who lives south of you, is Sodom with her daughters.

“Your elder sister is Samaria, who dwells with her daughters to the north of you; and your younger sister, who dwells to the south of you, is Sodom and her daughters.

47 Y et you have not merely walked in their ways or done according to their abominations; but, as if that were too little, you acted more corruptly in all your conduct than they.

You did not walk in their ways nor act according to their abominations; but, as if that were too little, you became more corrupt than they in all your ways.

48 A s I live,” declares the Lord God, “Sodom, your sister and her daughters have not done as you and your daughters have done.

“ As I live,” says the Lord God, “neither your sister Sodom nor her daughters have done as you and your daughters have done.

49 B ehold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had arrogance, abundant food and careless ease, but she did not help the poor and needy.

Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: She and her daughter had pride, fullness of food, and abundance of idleness; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

50 T hus they were haughty and committed abominations before Me. Therefore I removed them when I saw it.

And they were haughty and committed abomination before Me; therefore I took them away as I saw fit.

51 F urthermore, Samaria did not commit half of your sins, for you have multiplied your abominations more than they. Thus you have made your sisters appear righteous by all your abominations which you have committed.

“Samaria did not commit half of your sins; but you have multiplied your abominations more than they, and have justified your sisters by all the abominations which you have done.

52 A lso bear your disgrace in that you have made judgment favorable for your sisters. Because of your sins in which you acted more abominably than they, they are more in the right than you. Yes, be also ashamed and bear your disgrace, in that you made your sisters appear righteous.

You who judged your sisters, bear your own shame also, because the sins which you committed were more abominable than theirs; they are more righteous than you. Yes, be disgraced also, and bear your own shame, because you justified your sisters.

53 Nevertheless, I will restore their captivity, the captivity of Sodom and her daughters, the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, and along with them your own captivity,

“When I bring back their captives, the captives of Sodom and her daughters, and the captives of Samaria and her daughters, then I will also bring back the captives of your captivity among them,

54 i n order that you may bear your humiliation and feel ashamed for all that you have done when you become a consolation to them.

that you may bear your own shame and be disgraced by all that you did when you comforted them.

55 Y our sisters, Sodom with her daughters and Samaria with her daughters, will return to their former state, and you with your daughters will also return to your former state.

When your sisters, Sodom and her daughters, return to their former state, and Samaria and her daughters return to their former state, then you and your daughters will return to your former state.

56 A s the name of your sister Sodom was not heard from your lips in your day of pride,

For your sister Sodom was not a byword in your mouth in the days of your pride,

57 b efore your wickedness was uncovered, so now you have become the reproach of the daughters of Edom and of all who are around her, of the daughters of the Philistines—those surrounding you who despise you.

before your wickedness was uncovered. It was like the time of the reproach of the daughters of Syria and all those around her, and of the daughters of the Philistines, who despise you everywhere.

58 Y ou have borne the penalty of your lewdness and abominations,” the Lord declares.

You have paid for your lewdness and your abominations,” says the Lord.

59 F or thus says the Lord God, “I will also do with you as you have done, you who have despised the oath by breaking the covenant. The Covenant Remembered

For thus says the Lord God: “I will deal with you as you have done, who despised the oath by breaking the covenant. An Everlasting Covenant

60 Nevertheless, I will remember My covenant with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you.

“Nevertheless I will remember My covenant with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you.

61 T hen you will remember your ways and be ashamed when you receive your sisters, both your older and your younger; and I will give them to you as daughters, but not because of your covenant.

Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed, when you receive your older and your younger sisters; for I will give them to you for daughters, but not because of My covenant with you.

62 T hus I will establish My covenant with you, and you shall know that I am the Lord,

And I will establish My covenant with you. Then you shall know that I am the Lord,

63 s o that you may remember and be ashamed and never open your mouth anymore because of your humiliation, when I have forgiven you for all that you have done,” the Lord God declares.

that you may remember and be ashamed, and never open your mouth anymore because of your shame, when I provide you an atonement for all you have done,” says the Lord God.’”
