1 T o the Overseer with stringed instruments. -- A Psalm of Asaph. -- A Song. In Judah God known, in Israel His name great.
In Judah is God known: his name is great in Israel.
2 A nd His tabernacle is in Salem, And His habitation in Zion.
In Salem also is his tabernacle, and his dwelling place in Zion.
3 T here he hath shivered arrows of a bow, Shield, and sword, and battle. Selah.
There brake he the arrows of the bow, the shield, and the sword, and the battle. Selah.
4 B right Thou, honourable above hills of prey.
Thou art more glorious and excellent than the mountains of prey.
5 S poiled themselves have the mighty of heart, They have slept their sleep, And none of the men of might found their hands.
The stouthearted are spoiled, they have slept their sleep: and none of the men of might have found their hands.
6 F rom Thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, Both rider and horse have been fast asleep.
At thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, both the chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep.
7 T hou, fearful Thou, And who doth stand before Thee, Since Thou hast been angry!
Thou, even thou, art to be feared: and who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry?
8 F rom heaven Thou hast sounded judgment, Earth hath feared, and hath been still,
Thou didst cause judgment to be heard from heaven; the earth feared, and was still,
9 I n the rising of God to judgment, To save all the humble of earth. Selah.
when God arose to judgment, to save all the meek of the earth. Selah.
10 F or the fierceness of man praiseth Thee, The remnant of fierceness Thou girdest on.
Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain.
11 V ow and complete to Jehovah your God, All ye surrounding him. They bring presents to the Fearful One.
Vow, and pay unto the Lord your God: let all that be round about him bring presents unto him that ought to be feared.
12 H e doth gather the spirit of leaders, Fearful to the kings of earth!
He shall cut off the spirit of princes: he is terrible to the kings of the earth.
