Ephesians 5 ~ Ephesians 5

1 B e ye therefore imitators of God, as beloved children,

Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;

2 a nd walk in love, even as the Christ loved us, and delivered himself up for us, an offering and sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savour.

and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.

3 B ut fornication and all uncleanness or unbridled lust, let it not be even named among you, as it becomes saints;

But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;

4 a nd filthiness and foolish talking, or jesting, which are not convenient; but rather thanksgiving.

neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.

5 F or this ye are informed of, knowing that no fornicator, or unclean person, or person of unbridled lust, who is an idolater, has inheritance in the kingdom of the Christ and God.

For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

6 L et no one deceive you with vain words, for on account of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

7 B e not ye therefore fellow-partakers with them;

Be not ye therefore partakers with them.

8 f or ye were once darkness, but now light in Lord; walk as children of light,

For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

9 ( for the fruit of the light in all goodness and righteousness and truth,)

(for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)

10 p roving what is agreeable to the Lord;

proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.

11 a nd do not have fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather also reprove,

And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

12 f or the things that are done by them in secret it is shameful even to say.

For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.

13 B ut all things having their true character exposed by the light are made manifest; for that which makes everything manifest is light.

But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.

14 W herefore he says, Wake up, that sleepest, and arise up from among the dead, and the Christ shall shine upon thee.

Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

15 S ee therefore how ye walk carefully, not as unwise but as wise,

See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,

16 r edeeming the time, because the days are evil.

redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

17 F or this reason be not foolish, but understanding what the will of the Lord.

Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

18 A nd be not drunk with wine, in which is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit,

And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

19 s peaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and chanting with your heart to the Lord;

speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

20 g iving thanks at all times for all things to him God and Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

21 s ubmitting yourselves to one another in fear of Christ.

submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

22 W ives, to your own husbands, as to the Lord,

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

23 f or a husband is head of the wife, as also the Christ head of the assembly. He Saviour of the body.

For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

24 B ut even as the assembly is subjected to the Christ, so also wives to their own husbands in everything.

Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

25 H usbands, love your own wives, even as the Christ also loved the assembly, and has delivered himself up for it,

Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

26 i n order that he might sanctify it, purifying by the washing of water by word,

that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

27 t hat he might present the assembly to himself glorious, having no spot, or wrinkle, or any of such things; but that it might be holy and blameless.

that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

28 S o ought men also to love their own wives as their own bodies: he that loves his own wife loves himself.

So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

29 F or no one has ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, even as also the Christ the assembly:

For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:

30 f or we are members of his body;

for we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

31 B ecause of this a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall be united to his wife, and the two shall be one flesh.

For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

32 T his mystery is great, but I speak as to Christ, and as to the assembly.

This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

33 B ut ye also, every one of you, let each so love his own wife as himself; but as to the wife that she may fear the husband.

Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
