1 W hosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.
Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him.
2 B y this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments.
3 F or this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.
4 F or whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.
5 W ho is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? The Certainty of God’s Witness
6 T his is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.
This is He who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth.
7 F or there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.
8 A nd there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.
And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.
9 I f we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.
If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is the witness of God which He has testified of His Son.
10 H e that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son.
11 A nd this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
12 H e that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
13 T hese things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God. Confidence and Compassion in Prayer
14 A nd this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
15 A nd if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.
16 I f any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that.
17 A ll unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.
All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death. Knowing the True—Rejecting the False
18 W e know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.
We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.
19 A nd we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.
We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.
20 A nd we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.
