1 B ut Jesus, full of Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness
And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
2 f orty days, tempted of the devil; and in those days he did not eat anything, and when they were finished he hungered.
Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.
3 A nd the devil said to him, If thou be Son of God, speak to this stone, that it become bread.
And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.
4 A nd Jesus answered unto him saying, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
5 A nd, leading him up into a high mountain, shewed him all the kingdoms of the habitable world in a moment of time.
And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
6 A nd the devil said to him, I will give thee all this power, and their glory; for it is given up to me, and to whomsoever I will I give it.
And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
7 I f therefore thou wilt do homage before me, all shall be thine.
If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.
8 A nd Jesus answering him said, It is written, Thou shalt do homage to Lord thy God, and him alone shalt thou serve.
And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
9 A nd he led him to Jerusalem, and set him on the edge of the temple, and said to him, If thou be Son of God, cast thyself down hence;
And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:
10 f or it is written, He shall give charge to his angels concerning thee to keep thee;
For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:
11 a nd on hands shall they bear thee, lest in any wise thou strike thy foot against a stone.
And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
12 A nd Jesus answering said to him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt Lord thy God.
And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
13 A nd the devil, having completed every temptation, departed from him for a time.
And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.
14 A nd Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee; and a rumour went out into the whole surrounding country about him;
And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.
15 a nd he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.

16 A nd he came to Nazareth, where he was brought up; and he entered, according to his custom, into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up to read.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19 t o preach acceptable year of Lord.

20 A nd having rolled up the book, when he had delivered it up to the attendant, he sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed upon him.
And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
21 A nd he began to say to them, To-day this scripture is fulfilled in your ears.
And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
22 A nd all bore witness to him, and wondered at the words of grace which were coming out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this the son of Joseph?
And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?
23 A nd he said to them, Ye will surely say to me this parable, Physician, heal thyself; whatsoever we have heard has taken place in Capernaum do here also in thine own country.
And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.
24 A nd he said, Verily I say to you, that no prophet is acceptable in his country.
And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.
25 B ut of a truth I say to you, There were many widows in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up for three years and six months, so that a great famine came upon all the land,
But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;
26 a nd to none of them was Elias sent but to Sarepta of Sidonia, to a woman a widow.
But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.
27 A nd there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed but Naaman the Syrian.
And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.
28 A nd they were all filled with rage in the synagogue, hearing these things;
And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,
29 a nd rising up they cast him forth out of the city, and led him up to the brow of the mountain upon which their city was built, so that they might throw him down the precipice;
And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.
30 b ut he, passing through the midst of them, went his way,

31 a nd descended to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbaths.

33 A nd there was in the synagogue a man having a spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried with a loud voice,

34 s aying, Eh! what have we to do with thee, Jesus, Nazarene? hast thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy of God.
Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.
35 A nd Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out from him. And the demon, having thrown him down into the midst, came out from him without doing him any injury.
And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.
36 A nd astonishment came upon all, and they spoke to one another, saying, What word this? for with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.
And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.
37 A nd a rumour went out into every place of the country round concerning him.
And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.
38 A nd rising up out of the synagogue, he entered into the house of Simon. But Simon's mother-in-law was suffering under a bad fever; and they asked him for her.
And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.
39 A nd standing over her, he rebuked the fever, and it left her; and forthwith standing up she served them.
And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.
40 A nd when the sun went down, all, as many as had persons sick with divers diseases, brought them to him, and having laid his hands on every one of them, he healed them;
Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.
41 a nd demons also went out from many, crying out and saying, Thou art the Son of God. And rebuking them, he suffered them not to speak, because they knew him to be the Christ.
And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.
42 A nd when it was day he went out, and went into a desert place, and the crowds sought after him, and came up to him, and kept him back that he should not go from them.
And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.
43 B ut he said to them, I must needs announce the glad tidings of the kingdom of God to the other cities also, for for this I have been sent forth.
And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.
44 A nd he was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.
And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.
