1 T hen answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said,

Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said:

2 H ow long will it be ere ye make an end of words? mark, and afterwards we will speak.

“How long till you put an end to words? Gain understanding, and afterward we will speak.

3 W herefore are we counted as beasts, and reputed vile in your sight?

Why are we counted as beasts, And regarded as stupid in your sight?

4 H e teareth himself in his anger: shall the earth be forsaken for thee? and shall the rock be removed out of his place?

You who tear yourself in anger, Shall the earth be forsaken for you? Or shall the rock be removed from its place?

5 Y ea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine.

“The light of the wicked indeed goes out, And the flame of his fire does not shine.

6 T he light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and his candle shall be put out with him.

The light is dark in his tent, And his lamp beside him is put out.

7 T he steps of his strength shall be straitened, and his own counsel shall cast him down.

The steps of his strength are shortened, And his own counsel casts him down.

8 F or he is cast into a net by his own feet, and he walketh upon a snare.

For he is cast into a net by his own feet, And he walks into a snare.

9 T he gin shall take him by the heel, and the robber shall prevail against him.

The net takes him by the heel, And a snare lays hold of him.

10 T he snare is laid for him in the ground, and a trap for him in the way.

A noose is hidden for him on the ground, And a trap for him in the road.

11 T errors shall make him afraid on every side, and shall drive him to his feet.

Terrors frighten him on every side, And drive him to his feet.

12 H is strength shall be hungerbitten, and destruction shall be ready at his side.

His strength is starved, And destruction is ready at his side.

13 I t shall devour the strength of his skin: even the firstborn of death shall devour his strength.

It devours patches of his skin; The firstborn of death devours his limbs.

14 H is confidence shall be rooted out of his tabernacle, and it shall bring him to the king of terrors.

He is uprooted from the shelter of his tent, And they parade him before the king of terrors.

15 I t shall dwell in his tabernacle, because it is none of his: brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation.

They dwell in his tent who are none of his; Brimstone is scattered on his dwelling.

16 H is roots shall be dried up beneath, and above shall his branch be cut off.

His roots are dried out below, And his branch withers above.

17 H is remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street.

The memory of him perishes from the earth, And he has no name among the renowned.

18 H e shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world.

He is driven from light into darkness, And chased out of the world.

19 H e shall neither have son nor nephew among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings.

He has neither son nor posterity among his people, Nor any remaining in his dwellings.

20 T hey that come after him shall be astonied at his day, as they that went before were affrighted.

Those in the west are astonished at his day, As those in the east are frightened.

21 S urely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that knoweth not God.

Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, And this is the place of him who does not know God.”
