1 A nd when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is become of him.

And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people collected together to Aaron, and said to him, Up, make us a god, who will go before us; for this Moses, the man that has brought us up out of the land of Egypt,—we do not know what is become of him!

2 A nd Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden rings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.

And Aaron said to them, Break off the golden rings that are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring to me.

3 A nd all the people brake off the golden rings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.

Then all the people broke off the golden rings that were in their ears, and brought to Aaron.

4 A nd he received it at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, and made it a molten calf: and they said, These are thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

And he took out of their hand, and fashioned it with a chisel and made of it a molten calf: and they said, This is thy god, Israel, who has brought thee up out of the land of Egypt!

5 A nd when Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To-morrow shall be a feast to Jehovah.

And Aaron saw, and built an altar before it; and Aaron made a proclamation, and said, To-morrow is a feast to Jehovah!

6 A nd they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt-offerings, and brought peace-offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.

And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered up burnt-offerings, and brought peace-offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to sport.

7 A nd Jehovah spake unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, that thou broughtest up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves:

Then Jehovah said to Moses, Away, go down! for thy people, which thou hast brought out of the land of Egypt, is acting corruptly.

8 t hey have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed unto it, and said, These are thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

They have turned aside quickly out of the way that I commanded them: they have made themselves a molten calf, and have bowed down to it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, This is thy god, Israel, who has brought thee up out of the land of Egypt!

9 A nd Jehovah said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:

And Jehovah said to Moses, I see this people, and behold, it is a stiff-necked people.

10 n ow therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.

And now let me alone, that my anger may burn against them, and I may consume them; and I will make of thee a great nation.

11 A nd Moses besought Jehovah his God, and said, Jehovah, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, that thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?

And Moses besought Jehovah his God, and said, Why, Jehovah, doth thy wrath burn against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a strong hand?

12 W herefore should the Egyptians speak, saying, For evil did he bring them forth, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.

Why should the Egyptians speak, and say, For misfortune he has brought them out, to slay them on the mountains, and to annihilate them from the face of the earth? Turn from the heat of thine anger, and repent of this evil against thy people!

13 R emember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.

Remember Abraham, Isaac and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou sworest by thyself, and saidst to them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give to your seed, and they shall possess for ever!

14 A nd Jehovah repented of the evil which he said he would do unto his people.

And Jehovah repented of the evil that he had said he would do to his people.

15 A nd Moses turned, and went down from the mount, with the two tables of the testimony in his hand; tables that were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.

And Moses turned and went down from the mountain, the two tables of the testimony in his hand—tables written on both their sides: on this side and on that were they written.

16 A nd the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.

And the tables God's work, and the writing was God's writing, engraven on the tables.

17 A nd when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.

And Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, and said to Moses, There is a shout of war in the camp.

18 A nd he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome; but the noise of them that sing do I hear.

And he said, It is not the sound of a shout of victory, neither is it the sound of a shout of defeat: it is the noise of alternate singing I hear.

19 A nd it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount.

And it came to pass, when he came near the camp, and saw the calf and the dancing, that Moses' anger burned, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and shattered them beneath the mountain.

20 A nd he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it with fire, and ground it to powder, and strewed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.

And he took the calf that they had made, and burned with fire, and ground it to powder, and strewed on the water, and made the children of Israel drink.

21 A nd Moses said unto Aaron, What did this people unto thee, that thou hast brought a great sin upon them?

And Moses said to Aaron, What has this people done to thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin on them?

22 A nd Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on evil.

And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord burn! thou knowest the people, that they are on mischief.

23 F or they said unto me, Make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is become of him.

And they said to me, Make us a god, who will go before us; for this Moses, the man that has brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what is become of him!

24 A nd I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off: so they gave it me; and I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.

And I said to them, Who has gold? They broke off, and gave me, and I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.

25 A nd when Moses saw that the people were broken loose, (for Aaron had let them loose for a derision among their enemies,)

And Moses saw the people how they were stripped; for Aaron had stripped them to shame before their adversaries.

26 t hen Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Whoso is on Jehovah's side, let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.

And Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, He that is for Jehovah, to me. And all the sons of Levi gathered to him.

27 A nd he said unto them, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Put ye every man his sword upon his thigh, and go to and fro from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.

And he said to them, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel: Put every man his sword upon his hip; go and return from gate to gate through the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his friend, and every man his neighbour.

28 A nd the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.

And the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses; and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.

29 A nd Moses said, Consecrate yourselves to-day to Jehovah, yea, every man against his son, and against his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day.

And Moses said, Consecrate yourselves to-day to Jehovah, yea, every man with his son, and with his brother, and bring on yourselves a blessing to-day.

30 A nd it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto Jehovah; peradventure I shall make atonement for your sin.

And it came to pass the next day, that Moses said to the people, Ye have sinned a great sin. And now I will go up to Jehovah: perhaps I shall make atonement for your sin.

31 A nd Moses returned unto Jehovah, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.

And Moses returned to Jehovah, and said, Alas, this people has sinned a great sin, and they have made themselves a god of gold!

32 Y et now, if thou wilt forgive their sin-; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.

And now, if thou wilt forgive their sin … but if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book that thou hast written.

33 A nd Jehovah said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.

And Jehovah said to Moses, Whoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.

34 A nd now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine angel shall go before thee; nevertheless in the day when I visit, I will visit their sin upon them.

And now go, lead the people whither I have told thee: behold, my Angel shall go before thee; but in the day of my visiting I will visit their sin upon them.

35 A nd Jehovah smote the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made.

And Jehovah smote the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron had made.
