T hat the manslayer might flee there, who slew his neighbor unintentionally and had not previously been at enmity with him, that fleeing to one of these cities he might save his life:

para que pudiera huir allá quien, sin proponérselo y sin mediar antes enemistad con su prójimo, cometiera un homicidio, pues huyendo a una de estas ciudades el homicida podría salvar su vida.
