W hen they came to Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter. So it was given the name Marah.

وَحِينَ أتَوْا إلَى مَنْطِقَةِ مارَّةَ، لَمْ يَستَطِيعُوا أنْ يَشرَبُوا الماءَ الَّذِي كانَ فِيها لِأنَّهُ كانَ مُرّاً. لِذَلِكَ سُمِّيَتْ تِلْكَ المَنْطِقَةُ «مارَّة.»
