T hen they approached and spoke before the king about the king’s injunction, “Did you not sign an injunction that any man who makes a petition to any god or man besides you, O king, for thirty days, is to be cast into the lions’ den?” The king replied, “The statement is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which may not be revoked.”

Cosí si avvicinarono al re e parlarono davanti a lui del decreto reale: «Non hai tu firmato un decreto in base al quale chiunque durante trenta giorni farà una richiesta a qualsiasi dio o uomo all'infuori di te, o re, sarebbe gettato nella fossa dei leoni?». Il re rispose e disse: «La cosa è stabilita in conformità alla legge dei Medi e dei Persiani, che non può essere alterata».
