T hen they came near and said before the king concerning his prohibitory decree, Have you not signed an edict that any man who shall make a petition to any god or man within thirty days, except of you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be changed or repealed.


Cosí si avvicinarono al re e parlarono davanti a lui del decreto reale: «Non hai tu firmato un decreto in base al quale chiunque durante trenta giorni farà una richiesta a qualsiasi dio o uomo all'infuori di te, o re, sarebbe gettato nella fossa dei leoni?». Il re rispose e disse: «La cosa è stabilita in conformità alla legge dei Medi e dei Persiani, che non può essere alterata».
