a fin que la violence commise sur les soixante-dix fils de Jerubbaal reçût son châtiment, et que leur sang retombât sur Abimélec, leur frère, qui les avait tués, et sur les habitants de Sichem, qui l'avaient aidé à tuer ses frères.

God did this to punish Abimelech and the men of Shechem, because the seventy sons of Jerubbaal were killed by their brother Abimelech. And the men of Shechem gave him the strength to do it.
