D evant lui est un feu dévorant, Et derrière lui une flamme brûlante; Le pays était auparavant comme un jardin d'Éden, Et depuis, c'est un désert affreux: Rien ne lui échappe.

A fire devours before them, and behind them a flame burns; the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yes, and none has escaped.
