J esse’s three older sons had followed Saul to the battle. Their names were Eliab the first-born, next Abinadab, and third Shammah.

ذَهَبَ أبناءُ يَسَّى الثَّلاثَةُ الكِبارُ إلَى الحَربِ مَعَ شاوُلَ: أمّا أسماؤُهُمْ، فَالأوَّلُ ألِيآبُ، وَالثّانِي أبِينادابُ، وَالثّالِثُ شَمَّةُ.
