h aving the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them because of the blindness of their heart,

Their moral understanding is darkened and their reasoning is beclouded. alienated (estranged, self-banished) from the life of God because of the ignorance (the want of knowledge and perception, the willful blindness) that is deep-seated in them, due to their hardness of heart.
