T hen they said to him, Say now Shibboleth! and he said, Sibboleth, and did not manage to pronounce rightly. Then they took him, and slaughtered him at the fords of the Jordan. And there fell at that time of Ephraim forty-two thousand.

они говорили: «Скажи “шибболет”». Если он говорил: «сибболет», – а ефремиты не мог произнести это слово правильно, – они хватали и убивали его у бродов на Иордане. В то время было убито сорок две тысячи ефремитов.
